I'll be in Kona for that week and I'm not really the sun bathing type and would love to do some hog hunting. I've done my share of Mule deer and Elk Hunting but have always wanted to stick a pig. Anyway any info would be much appreciated.

Jon is a great guy, very knowledgeable and a fine sportsman. You can't go wrong with him. I'd offer to take you hunting myself, but here's the problem:
I now get one or two emails each month from people on the mainland, many Jesse's members, who want to come to the Big Island and ask, very politely, if I'll take them out hunting. I've now done this about 10 times and have met some wonderful people, like Patrick Alcisto, Shaun Ayers and his buddies, and Mike Paluzzi. But some have been really nasty or less than honorable. I agreed to take a couple of guys sheep hunting and we planned to meet at the Kilohana check station at 3:00 in the afternoon. I left work early and raced there and waited an hour, but nobody showed. I called the guys and they told me that they had changed their plans and decided to go fishing. They never called and told me. It's an hour drive each way for me and I let the guys know that they were inconsiderate. "F--- you, man!!" was the reply. "We're on F---ing vacation, so chill!!" I've since read several of their posts on this forum and they seem pleasant in writing but they are a couple of jerks in person. Another guy got here and wanted to use my rifle and asked if he could stay at my house, since hotels are so expensive. He also asked if he could borrow one of my cars for a couple of days. I'm serious. I couldn't believe it and sent him packing. He called me every name in the book. He also posts here. Two others, who post here from time to time, were poachers, basically.
I have another story, and it's a doozy, but if I tell it, you'll know exactly who I'm talking about, and that guy is armed. Enough said, but taking mainland guys out hunting hasn't been a positive experience, overall. The guys I mentioned by name are welcome back as often as they can make it, and I feel fortunate to call them my friends. But the others, well ....
I sent you an email Doc and I'll give Jon a call tomorrow. I'm definatly not into burning bridges and I totally understand with the experiences you've had. I have a great place here on private ground for pheasant and quail and a guy asked if I'd take him and he showed up with four dogs and six guys he didn't even really know. The land owner was pretty steamed and almost cost me my spot so I feel your pain. Nothing worse than being out in the sticks with a wildcard with a gun. Actually pretty scary.
I've got lodging, I'll bring my own gun and have my own car I just want to do something different than the normal tourist stuff. I'd love to surf but sounds pretty dicey with the locals and with the weather its pretty hit and miss. Seemed like a great way to really get out and see the real island instead of the inside of a hotel room, crowded beach, or gift shop. I'm not sure I'll have the scratch to hire a guide as I'm building a house right now but I'll give Jon a call and find out what its gonna take. Sounds like around 600 buck for a day pretty much universally.
docherry. NO WAY?!!! i would love to hear that final story someday. i always dreamed of hunting with you someday. sorry some fellas messed it all up for us mainlanders. i understand.
if you ever find yourself on the mainland, in san francisco. i'll take out.
too bad, so sad.
have fun hunting in hawaii. i am planning a trip to the islands with the wife, and i will sneak out to shoot something and hopefully catch a peacock bass.
Just talked to Jon on the phone and I had actually talked with him before. Seems like a great guy. I think its gonna be a little out of my reach. Any ideas on public land hunting?
My brother live is hilo. Much of the island is open for hunting. I belive the bird seasons just closed, but big game hunting is permitted year round I believe everyother day. You can shoot sheep, pigs, and goats without a tag just a licence. You will need you hunter safty card to get. My brother sees pigs and sheep on public land up on mona kae. Look on hawaii's web site for maps of public land and regs. Good Luck
I've never flown with a gun before. I'm flying there on Alaska and back on GO, and Northwest. I'm a little afraid of getting my gun stolen. I have a cheap(good shooter) 6.5 carcano that if I lost I wouldn't be out much not to mention its short and light is that enough round for pigs? 160 grain round nose soft points at about 2100 fps. Open sights but accurate out to about 150.
Your guns will be fine. If you get a locking case, you need to either get TSA locks or don't lock the guns until the TSA folks tell you to do so. If you lock the case otherwise, the TSA will remove your locks.
The better the case, the better off you'll be. The luggage apes are frickin' unbelievable... the horror stories are all true.
Otherwise, don't worry about it. I've travelled all over the country with my guns without any problem.
Does a hard plastic case work or does it have to be aluminum. Whatever I bring its gonna be short and lightweight. From the sounds of it for pigs you don't get many shots over 100 yards in Hawaii. I'm doing it for sure. I've made a coupel contacts that are solid. Maybe the 30 carbine. That would be fun.
here is my take. you get on a plane and fly to some exotic destination to do some hunting. skimping on the the case that houses your bow/firearm is not a good way to save money. imagine seeing your first ever hawaiian pig, only to find your equipment is messed up?
i bought an SKB bowcase, when my rig showed up in colorado, shooting 6 inches right at 20 yards. they banged it up that badly. if i ever fly somewhere with a rifle, i am surrounding it with the best case i can get.
that said, they make some great and economical cases. i bought my SKB on sale, off the internet. it is plastic, with TSA locks. the idea with the locks is that i can lock everything up. some TSA officer will have a universal key to suss things out. then he locks it back up. no need to send the package through unlocked for inspection. too many potential thieves along the way.
I'll take an open fixed sight weapon that is reliable but not a huge investment. I never fly with guns and may never again thats why a 150 to 250 dollar investment in a gun case doesn't make alot of sense for me I think. I already own a hard sided plastic case. I was just curious if they accepted that or not. I'm ready to load up some HOG loads and go test them out. It will either be one of my 6.5 varients or a 30 carbine depending on terrain and shot selection. I'm soooo excited for my first hog hunt and stoked it will take place in Hawaii.
enjoy your time in hawaii. If you plan on sheep hunting I would recommend a scoped gun in a farther reaching caliber. If you want a pig, anything that'll shoot 100 yards accurately is good. Some of my friends hunt with a 30 carbine, I'd say it'd do the job if you keep the ranges short. Most shots at pigs will be around 30-50 yards or even closer.
I love my lever 30-30 with peep sight for pig hunting, it's short, maneuverable and enough bang for pigs if you place your bullet right. My friend Nic does really well with a 20" barreled 20ga slug gun with iron sights. Doc's little carbine looked nice too for pigs, I forget the caliber but basically a necked down 30-30.
Public land DIY is totally doable with good results. Try reading some of Doccherry's, NicBarca's and my posts from the big island. All examples of what you can expect on public land on the BI. Shoot me a pm and I'll tell you a couple spots that may be worth checking out if you can't find someone to show you around.
That sucks you've been burned Bruce. Hopefully those turkeys stay State side.
