Just for fun, and to see what we come up with, tell us the distance of every hog you have killed. Use your best judgement if you don't have exact distances.
Rules are;
1) Any legal weapon.
2) First shots only. No finishing shot distances please.
3) Any hunting method except hogs that are bayed by hounds. No offence to the hound guys. Your method is great; it's just so different, it will really change the final results of the question.
4) Please tell your stories if you like, and list as many distances as possible. This will give us a better final average.

If you get in this thread early and would like to make a guess, please do.

I have yet to shoot a hog, so I can't enter right now. I will however guess 77 yds. for an average.
I think the results will be interesting, have fun.

Wow looks like I will be fine compound bow hunting, 25 to 35 yds, SHOULD not be any problem. Can't wait to find out.

Any old timers want to trade albacore fishing trip for hog hunting, please see my post on swaping or ph me @ 310 372-0770. I post as reel passion on allcoast sportfishing.

The closest for me would be would be about 35 yrds(handgun)and the longest about 175 yards(rifle)...so I'd have to say 100 yards is about average. The 35 yard one was a complete fluke and kind of a funny story..happened years ago in Stockdale Mtn..My partner and I had met back up after the morning hunt and were sitting under this big tree(for the guys who've been there, the large tree right before you get into the 5 little canyons in the back.)It was mid-day so were yacking about the morning and eating lunch...we weren't being that loud but we weren't trying to be quiet either. All of a sudden he stops talking and his eyes get big...I look to see what he's looking at..and here comes these 5 small hogs...his rifle coming up but mines leaned up against the tree about seven feet away.Well it might as well have been on the moon, there was no way I was going to grab it in time.So I rolled over and drew my Redhawk just as his 06 goes off..BOOM..layin next to an 06 when it goes off
<
...he takes a 75 pounder down but the pigs are running now so I line up on the closest one and cap off...little red sow about 60lbs hit her in the middle but alittle far back more in the diaphram area.. squealed and went down but trying to get back up.. put a finisher in her..buddy looking at me.."what's all that yellow S*** all over you?" I laid in the mustard from the sandwiches

I haven't taken but a couple. Average range is inside of 40 yards. My Tejon hog last year was around 25 yards or less. I had the .44 Super Blackhawk on him, but wasn't confident in my ability with it (just got the gun two days earlier) so I put it down and shot him with the 30-06.

Killzone, if you play your cards (and the wind) right, you should have no problem making a bow shot on a hog at a very reasonable distance. At least on private land. You may have to put in some serious time on public land before you even see a hog... and then seeing one in range is gonna be a hit or miss proposition. Between their poor eyesight, the fact that noise doesn't seem to bother them if they can't see or smell what's making it, and the thick country they live in... well, 20-25 yards is very realistic.

The downside is tracking them in that thick stuff after the shot.

I've only got 2 sows under my belt as of now. The 95lb sow was 60 yds and MOVING. The 200lb sow was 200 yds and trotting(spooked with no time to close the distance). Both were one shot kills with my 300 win mag. I'll be hunting with my virgin Ruger 77 257 Weatherby next time.

i have shot 3 by this " fair chase" method. the first was at about 100 yards with a 300 win mag dropped in its tracks the second was at about 35 yards again with my 300 mag and the 3rd was about 40 yards with a .308. i fail to see why a dog hunt must be considered different in my oppinion the hogs ive killed with dogs were not only given a more sporting chance but also had opportunitty to defend themselves (as the tree huggers like to say) since my hand was on all of them 2 with a knife and several with a handgun under the shoulder. different for your question yes different no. with dogs you need to run so you better be in good shape.

tnctcb,
I consider hunting with dog to be fair chase. The point of my asking this question is to figure terrain and habitat constraints and how they work for and against the hogs and the hunter, one on one. IMO, the shot in most cases while hound hunting is very short range and dose not reflect to any great extent the aspects I outlined above. I hope that awnsers your question. Thanks for posting.
P.S. Post some of your close battle stories. I for one would love to hear them and see your photos.

About a dozen kills in CA, all spot and stalk.

The shortest about 7 yards with a Desert Eagle .44, that boar actually took ME by surprise!! And the longest was a 300+yard poke with a .300 Win Mag.

Most of my bowkills have been less than 20 with the longest being a 34 yard shot at a 240 lb boar, my biggest bowkill.

If i could remember half the hogs I shot, I could fill up several pages so i'll go with the longest and shortest. Closest shot was at my feet with a bow, probably 3 feet from the tip of the arrow to the hog. Longest was around 325 w/the .06
Average is probably in the 125 to 175 yard range.

Hogs and javelina's-between 50 and 150 yards spot and stalk. With my contender I have taken a hog at 60 yards and a javelina at 89 yards. The rest have been with a rifle-7mm-08 or 22-250.

At Parkfield on a Jack Ranch hunt, came around the corner in the pickup and I yelled pig! I jumped out, chambered a 180 grain round Nostler Partition Winchester, Springfield .30 06 and brought the fix power Weaver scope on the 110 lb sow. It was running quartering towards me to my left at 70 yds. Squeezed off the trigger "Bang" and lost sight of the pig. The guide said you hit it. It ran another 200 yds and stopped. I fired another round at 100 yds at its butt, and the bullet went the entire length through the boiler room. It ran another 60 yds and dropped. After gutting and skinning, the first bullet had hit the left front shoulder blade, shattered it, and stopped approx. 2-3 inches into the chest cavity. That was one tough piggy at 110 lbs full weight, not field dressed.

tnctcb,

No need to raise the hackles in this case. I am a dyed in the wool houndsman, but didn't take offense at fairchase's inquiry. He is trying to gather data based on a certain set of circumstances. If we were to throw in our data of 3 feet, 1.5 feet, 8 feet or whatever, it would completely skew the result set.
