I am building a trap but can't decide on a hinged from above door that closes by gravity or a hinged gait that is sping loaded to close. nay input would help.

TOPC... I do not have a diagram, but all of the ones that we have made have a weighted platform in the bottom that trips the door.. The door is held up by a cable that attaches to the platform. When the hogs walk in and step on the platform, the door releases and slams down. We also have 2 spring loaded pins that pop out above the door to keep the hogs from rooting under it and pushing it up. I hope you can get a mental picture of what I am talking about..

Also, the platform is adjustable so we can set it too heavy for a yote, but light enough for a good size hog.. Plus, hogs are in groups most of the time...

BirdDawg,

You're correct. You can't trap them here except under depredation permits. But many other states don't regulate the wild/feral hogs at all.

Thinkin' about putting some traps in that creekbed over near your place?

The depredation guys here kill them in the traps and dispose of the carcasses. You can't relocate them in CA either, nor can you sell them. If I read right, under a depredation permit, you can't even keep some for the freezer.

Dunno about TX and MS, though. Seems like one of the guys from Texas said he sold some to market, and slaughtered some for himself and his friends.

Speckmisser is right. I've tried to hook up some vinyard owners over the last couple weeks with depredation permits. The DFG has professional trappers rather than the landowner's designee do the hog trapping. Landowners can have their designee's on the permit take deer though. The carcass has to go to a zoo, reduction plant or chartiy (like loaves and fishes) for consumption + a whole lot of paperwork per kill.

Good question BirdDawg... First off, we consider hogs on the ranch a nuisance.. You have seen what they can do to piece of unculitivated land, imagine what they can do to a piece of farmland!! It is amazing how much stuff a heard of 10 or 12 hogs can tear up.. We trap them to get them out of there.. Once trapped, we do one of 5 things:

Some we kill and eat
Some we give away to whoever in town wants to eat them
Some we sell to local guy who buys them
Some of the smaller ones we use to train our hog dogs with
All others are usually just killed

Hey BirdDawg,

I just replied to your message. I must've missed it when it came through.

If you've got hogs in the creek, JHOT stands ready to roll. And I promise we'll leave that elk alone.
