No first hand experience, but I once heard a pro hog trapper say he uses whole dried corn cobs soaked in buttermilk. He also puts them outside the cage as well as inside. Once they eat a few outside, they are a lot more likely to go inside for more.

I trap a lot in Comal County Tx.( Canyon Lake and Spring Branch ) and I use whole corn with a little diesel poored on it. This may sound wierd but it works really good. The coons and deer stay away from the corn and another bonus is that hogs love to roll around in diesel. I don't know if there are Telephone poles around where you hunt/trap hogs but if there is take a few minutes and check out the bottoms of the poles for any signs of rubbing. Hogs rub against that creosote that oozes out of the pole and it helps keep the Lice, Tics and Fleas to a minimum. And when they eat corn that has the diesel on it there are no ill effects from it. I even put diesel on old stumps near where I hog hunt so they can rub on the stumps. Sometimes this ALONE can draw hogs into an area. Just think of how GOOD thier noses are. They can smell that petrolium a mile away probably. Anyways, I use Dieseled Corn in all my traps and I think I caught about 80+ pigs last year and I've caught about 35+ pigs since 2002 using Dieseled Corn. Oh about keeping a trap in one place. My experience is that you can trap an area till the hogs are pretty much all caught(which usually never happens) or until the hogs get trap smart and start remembering all of their buddies that keep disappearing over night. If you are not catching any hogs and there is a lot of sign around the trap than you might try moving the trap as little as 30 yards away from where you currently have the trap. Also I almost forgot to mention that I ALWAYS load my hogs out of my traps alive into my Hog Getter trailer and never shoot them in the trap. Some folks will say shooting hogs in the trap won't affect the trapping and that is true some of the time, BUT the SMARTER hogs will be much more hesitant to go into the trap if there is blood and scent from a hog that had been shot in the trap.And once you have have caught all of the dumd pigs than all you have left are the SMART ones... Just my opinion and my experience over the last 5 years of trapping swine...Good luck. I hope my babbling helped you some..:smile-big-blue:

Diesel fule that is pretty interesting... I will have to try that. I have a friend who feeds his hogs coal all the time I guess they love it and it helps with worms and other pests...Thanks for all the info Hank

I have heard of the diesel on stumps, but I never heard of it on the corn, Im gonna try it as soon as I can. It sounds like it works great. I do most of my trapping in Hondo (Medina County). Thats were I also do deer hunting. I grew up in McQueeney, so I also do some trapping in Guadalupe County. Thanks for all your info.

It might sound funny, but I would recommend corn that has been soaked in beer and allowed to sit out in the sun for a few days. The potent mix brings them in from greater distances because of the sweet smell it produces...No, I am not pulling your leg on this one; it really does work.
