There was a very nice picture/drawing of a hogs vitals on this forum at one time. I have lost mine and can't seem to find it. Does anyone have this? If so, will you post?

Thanks!

Thank you!

What makes up the "shield" on a big boar? Is it the shoulder bone or is it something else? Where area does it cover?

Thanks.

the shield is made up of mostly scar tissue like subtance it can be very thick it covers the bones on the front and over laps about 2-3 inches both forward and behind the front leg. i have skined a few hogs where the shield was 3 inches thick i have even removed a bullet from one that only pentrated about 2 inches into the shield and did no dammage to the shoulder. so i would avoid shoulder shots if you can,

but if you are close enough with a big enough bullet you can take him down

PIGIG,

Thanks, you are a wealth of information. I'm a bow hunter and have shot a lot of hogs but never a really big boar. I guess on a really big boar the only real option is a quartering away angle to avoid the shield.

Anyone have any luck penetrating a direct hit to the shield on a big boar with an arrow?

I had posted on another thread that I feel people are shooting pigs too far back and this picture bears proof to that, take a look at what vitales you are hitting if your holding behind the shoulder, it's a fact most game animals not just pigs are shot too far back, as many shooters aim for the largest part of the animal.

Again my choice shot is head first, then neck, then shoulder and to clearfy not a high shoulder but midway up into front leg if I get a quarting shot I aim for far shoulder.

IMHO this is why some of you feel pigs are so tuff to kill and they soak up lead because your not placing you bullet in the right place to start with.

I see many on this board talking about guns shooing MOA or less, so now place that MOA shot into a killing zone and not just into flesh.

i have only seen it done 1 time 15 yards with a 100lb PSE magnum but this guy also hunts rino and elephants. with a bow the quater shot si yor safest bet but alwas aim for the exit point infront of the Opposite shoulder

I have the book The perfect shot, North America" by Craig Bodington.

Very interesting to read, or just look at the pictures.

Hntrjohn.

I have the African version of The Perfect Shot and their vital descriptions are very accurate. How does the vital picture in your book compare to the one posted above?

Hntrjohn,

Thanks for the information. If you ever get a chance to scan and post the image here that would be awesome - I'm a big fan of theose Perfect Shot books.
