Southern California hog hunting legends Jim Matthews and Durwood Hollis will be presenting a hog hunting seminar at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at the Fountain Valley Turner's Outdoorsman store.

Matthews, dubbed "The Hogfather" by Forbes Small Business magazine, is a long-time Southern California outdoor writer and publisher of California Hog Hunter, a quarterly newsletter on hunting wild pigs. Matthews' weekly newspaper package on hunting and fishing is syndicated in 11 daily newspapers.

Durwood Hollis earned his "Mr. Pig" moniker by being one of the state's most successful public land pig hunters, killing dozens and dozens of hogs on public land. Hollis is also a prolific hunting writer, having his work published in all of the nation's hunting and shooting magazines. He has also written five books, including Hunting North American Big Game (Krause Publications, 2000), which contains an extensive chapter on the pursuit of wild boar.

Between them, Matthews and Hollis have nearly 100 years of hog hunting experience, and they've long ago lost count on how many pigs they've taken.

Wild hogs have become one of the most popular big game animals in California with the annual sporting kill of hogs rivaling the state's deer harvest.

"Even with the growing interest in hog hunting, many sportsmen still have no idea how to go about setting up a hog hunt or what's needed to be successful. This seminar will offer them a primer on this exciting sport," said Matthews.

The seminar will cover public land hunting, setting up a guided hunt - where 90 percent of wild hogs are killed in California each year - and tips on the proper firearms and gear to use for hog hunting. Matthews and Hollis also debunk some myths about wild hogs, and there is always a Q&A session at the end of the presentation for hog hunting questions.

The Fountain Valley seminar has limited seating and sportsmen are encouraged to call the store in advance at (714) 965-5151 to reserve a spot.

"Wild hogs are available throughout much of the state. They are intelligent, wary, challenging animals. They `eat' better than domestic pork. Best of all, we can hunt them year around," said Matthews. "It's no wonder they're replacing deer as our number one big game animal."

Turner's Outdoorsman has stores in Fountain Valley, Orange, West Covina, Pasadena, Reseda, Norwalk, Redondo Beach, Signal Hill, San Marcos, Kearny Mesa, Chino, Riverside, and San Bernardino.
