This was a hunt of a life time. I went to the meat locker were I took them to be processed and hanging weight was from 90 down to 60 lbs. The sow was the largest. I have to say the first two hogs I was way off on a good kill. I had to track them to finish them off. I had never shot through a scope when an animal was at fast trot. I had always fired at a target standing still. But, once I figured it out. The last ones were almost on the money.
I was using a Browning BLR 308 with a 150gr bullet. I'm not expert on what guns or bullets are best for hogs. I was pleased with the results of it's ability to shoot hogs once I got on target to do a good clean kill. I also use this gun for deer.
I kept a peice of the meat and cooked it last night. I have to say. These hogs taste great. They have been eating prime harvest food from the local farmers and it made a difference in the flavor of the meat. These hogs had a lot of nice fat on them. And they were very clean. I didn't see any bugs (ticks) on them.
Techman I was born and raised in Merced and as a teenager we use to hang out in that same area. I never knew they were there until now.
I can't wait to go back. Only 17 days before opening day duck season.
If any of you hunt out at Kesterson. I'll be there BBQ'ing hog to share with everyone out there Friday night.
Sounds like a great hunt. There are couple of giant ranches with hogs on them in San Joaquin county too--one's been around since before California was even a state but I don't speak castillion to ask permission, dang it--I think both are over 250,000 acres. Found the ranch hand house to one of them and got a stern 'no'. I'm glad someone's getting permission to hunt these places!
Meanwhile, feel free to send a pig on down to the San Luis barn for a BBQ there...lol Hopefully, I'll have some venison for the crew there b4 the duck opener.
