I just watched the show on TV the other night. If there are that many hogs why does it cost so much to hunt them? You would think people would let you on to their land to git rid of the pests. (I do know it is TV and probably is over dramatized)

I have found that when land owners relize they can get people to pay them to come hunt on the land the HOGS are no longer a "problem"

In the sue happy state of CA I am sure Insurance is not cheap if you want to open up your land for hunting. Also the popularity of hog hunting has increased dramatically which will cause prices to go up as well. Can't blame the guides or land owners because we still continue to pay what they are asking for.

I agree with Ruger on his comment completley.

That show is unbearable to watch. I saw 5 minutes of it the other night when these 2 idiots sicked their dog on a boar that very obviously pen raised. It just stood there right in front of the hunters and camera men even after they pulled the dog off. They claimed the dog didn't want anything to do with the pig, and they had to go get more dogs to "stop it" LOL.

And then in another part of one I saw, the people in a neighborhood were afraid to let their kids play in the yards because there was some rooting on the lawns. They thought the pigs were going to come out of the bushes and attack the children!

Incredible what TV and try to make people believe.

I would imagine a great Dane is not the dog of choice as well for hunting hogs.

great dane!! i know what show you are talking about.

the show was STUPID! that one ranch with the cattle and hog problem..they had 4 people, dogs, ATV's and they hoped to get ONE pig to call it a successful evening. at that rate, it would take years to make a dent in the population.

i did get mild entertainment from the two hawaiian guys..

I watched that episode last night with my wife (right after I came home from a hog hunt in which my hunting partner shot a nice boar, with me to help drag). I gave a running commentary on the stupidity of the whole show. Basically, the crew in Florida got two hogs and the trappers in Texas got one. Talk about job security. Traps work. Guns work. That Texas ranch should have hired two guys with night vision on their rifles, and set up traps like the guy in Hawaii. The trapper in Hawaii had his act together; trap 'em and donate to local families. Even then; I'd be using a spear or knife.

TV: what can you say?

What I can't understand is why the hell they want to jump on them and tie them up and then end up stabbing some of them to death when they could just about walk up to any of them (some were in snares, some had dogs on them and some just stood their ground) and shoot them. Is the thought of using an evil gun so repugnant that they just won't show it on TV or what? Also, I did I just miss it or what? Did they ever explain what they do with the ones that they cart off alive?

I would imagine the producers of the show do not want them killed on the show, but lets just stress them out as much as possible and then kill them off camera. yeah thats a lot more humane.

if i lived in that neighborhood. i would convert my frontyard into a pen trap. bait those things..corn flinger if need be. yard all jacked up anyways. game on!

i bet there isnt a neighbor there that would call the cop on me, popping them in the head one by one with a small caliber.

that running commentary comment by myfriends...makes me laugh. i'm the same way.

What you all did not understand is that the Great Dane singled out the president of that farms pig association and after eliminating him the rest of the hogs could not provide for themselves and either died or moved off the ranch so problem solved with only one nights work

i dont know about the people on the show. but some people catch them live and put them in a pen for 30 days and corn feed them out. they say it makes better meat if you faten them up. in texas ( the big hog problem state ) people catch them live because they can sell them live. hunting ranchers buy them so they can have plenty hog on there land. that way they can charge you $600 for a two day hunt. there are some ranchers in tx that will give you some real good deals to hunt hogs. and some places that do have real problems with hogs. but if the problem was half as bad as TV makes it out to be. they would be asking people to come hunt for free, not charging you to hunt them. and they would pass laws so you cant buy and sell live hogs. look at it this way they show some hunts and dont try to selll you a trail cam or nikon scope. just some BS that hogs are taking over.

Yes, he was kidding you.

While I certainly acknowledge that there is an abundance of sensationalism to this series and the program, Pig Bomb, I would expect you to acknowledge the following:
*feral hogs are increasing in both distribution and population
*feral hogs are a non-native invasive species capable of causing extensive damage to native flora and fauna, livestock, crops, and other forms of human enterprise
*the extent to which hogs are causing tangible damage to said human enterprise and the degree to which the presence of feral hogs is welcome is very regional from both a macro and micro perspective; institutionally, hogs are managed as a big game species in California where the hours and means of take are regulated and enforced, whereas in Texas, they may be taken at any time of the day or night by any means. From a local perspective, the attitudes of property owners varies from a willingness to pay individuals to kill the hogs, to allowing individuals to hunt hogs for free, to charging a fee for the opportunity, and finally to not allowing any take of hogs at all.

I say let the pigs do what they want and far as populating and spreading. Just look what we as humans have done to the country, and the deer and everything else aren't trying to eradicate us....

rifleman.
i agree they are a problem and cause great damage. i just dont think its quite as bad as tv makes it out to be. but there are pockets in tx and other states that people pay to have them killed. and there are alot of ranchers that can make a buck from them and keep the numbers down so the damage doesnt get to out of hand.
i will be in tx in two weeks to hunt them. hope i can help out on the control problem.
