Not much here in So. Cal but you could always pay to kill a pig at the BIg Horn Ranch in Moreno Val. Hemet area. There has been extensive talk on the ranch good and bad. As far a San Timoteo Canyon be careful of the laws on firearms and what not. Check everything out first before the landowner says go for it. I know if a few instances of guys getting arrested for firemans in the canyon. Just a heads up. As far a pigs 0-1 on a scale of 1-10.

For any good concentrations of pigs, I think Santa Barbara county will be as far south as you can find them.

San T canyon has had pigs for a long time because of the flowing stream many were killed by a hunter paid by the PGA to rid the course of pigs but some fell to some rather skilled archers who attended a local high school several years ago_Once the huggers got it converted to Park Land hunting opportunities ended.I read about some pigs killed in the SB Nat Forest desert side .I was going to apply for a shotgun only pig hunt in the Santa Ana drainage in Riverside County but the Bd of Supervisors quashed it,CA F&G told me there were feral hogs there info I had indicated people were hunting them with quiet gear.FYI there are pigs in San Bernardino County but not as many as in other areas of the state,a friend of mine told me where he's seen pig tracks that I want to check out using my 4x4.

Howdy all, I've been gone for a while on work related stuff, but I saw this and I just love to spill it all, when it comes to SoCal pigs.

1. Scouted unarmed in the river near Norco. Saw no pigs, but I did scare a couple archery hunters on their way in, so they are there, just not huntable, legally anyway.

2. San Timoteo Cyn. Yeah I shot a sow there many years ago. There are still recent accounts of pigs in the area, by land owners.

3. And you all are gonna love this one...Mojave River two parter:

a) Years ago I chased pigs all over the Mojave River bottom near OroGrande, but recent visits make me believe they're all gone (shot-out/moved-on).
b) About 2 weeks ago I saw a small pig cross the road near Silverwood Lake. It was all black, about 80 lbs. It was just before sunrise, and crossed Arrowhead Lake road from the West to the no-tresspassing area of the river forks, at the base of the South side of the DRY dam. There is open area around there, so if you just have to have a SoCal pig, you could do some careful unarmed scouting for tracks. If you're lucky, they could be up into the forest area, and just passing through the river forks area.

Any of you that may have been trying to keep the Silverwood pigs a secret, sorry.

Tejon Ranch is the closest to LA, where you can legally hunt wild pigs for a fair price. The National Forest hunting areas are poor to non exsistant at best. All other areas that have been hinted at are either on private property or " rumors"
on public park land where you can not hunt at all. So be very careful putting the sneak on any pigs you see in the Southern California region, if you do see them at all. They are probably enviro/peta protected...

The real question I would love to see answered is how many wild pigs have been legally taken in Southern California?

Well according to DFG, in 2004 the wild pig take was:

Santa Barbara County - 301
Ventura County - 17
Los Angeles County - 11
Riverside County - 5
San Bernardino County - 1

Yeah, That's it I'm going out and get a tag, so I can get in on one of those 17 pigs... Pretty good odds...

My question in my first post was PURE SARCASM, I was already well aware of the LOW numbers.
That's my point about saving your money and going with a guide or to a reputable hunting ranch like Tejon. I have never hunted there, but the posts on this site alone, that do reflect good hunts speak for themselves.
The area in Southern California is huge and there is loads of habitat that wild pigs would love to exploit. BUT, the shear numbers of human
populaton and the anti hunter mentality of 99% of the residents would prevent any chance of a serious hunting program.
Can you image the headlines in the fish wrap, "man seen in couny park sneaking up on poor defenselass cute little piggies, while brandishing an automatic weapon".
Or some other anti jibberish...

Well you can count out L.A. County. Most or all of their 11 came from private land hunts on the southern section of Tejon Ranch, and Catalina Island.
That leaves the 6 in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. If you know a dairyman who's dairy farm borders the Santa Ana river, that will let you hunt there, you might score a pig. But now most of that area is being incorporated into the cities of Ontario and Chino, so the "no shooting" ordanances are now in effect.
And your chances of finding one of the Silverwood Lake pigs is about as good as finding Bigfoot.
I do think that pigs will spread south from the Tejon Ranch into the Angeles, but it's going to take a while.

I know exactly who you are talking about....i graduated from Yucaipa High in 2001. i never tried it back then because i wasnt into archery. I also know the exact area that you are talking about. I got permission from a land owner to hunt his property near by and thats where i saw a fresh scat pile. on my way down there i saw a truck parked on the side of the road and a husband and wife got out w/there bows.....im guessing they got permission or where hired by someone, it was rather close to the Golf course. I would have kept scouting the wash but archery deer season was approaching so i needed to start scouting for that. But i will start back up agian next spring when all the seasons are over with.

As far as Riverside and Norco go, there are definatly piggies in dar. I use to wheel in there all the time and i blew up my truck in the river. My wife has spent alot of time in there riding horses and has seen quite a few piggies. I heard that Pleasent Valley (preserve in norco) had alot but i have riden horses through there quite a bit and never saw one.

I know what you mean about the yuppies down here....i just separated from the Air Force where i was stationed in Arizona for 3 years, black and white difference from there to here! I got some good Javalina spot there that i gotta go back to next season.

How close are you to Los Padres National Forest? I used to get a few pigs out of there, but it was a long drive for me and I haven't been for a number of years. There could still be a good number of pigs there, though.

Chap Dog, I sent you an email about where I used to hunt, but I'm afraid it might not help much. Good luck.
