Scott,

First and foremost... WELCOME ABOARD!!!

I used to hunt NC, over near Nantahala Lake. Supposedly a lot of hogs there too, but I never saw the first one. I believe the key to hunting those pigs is to either use dogs to get 'em out of the swamp, or to hire a local guide who knows where they're holing up.

They're definitely out there, though. Some other options are to check in with the local game wardens and park rangers about where the most sign has been showing right before you head out. Pigs are notorious wanderers, and trying to pin them down in one region is an exercise in futility. Unlike deer, they may feed an area 'til it's cleaned out, or they may choose to eat a little on top of one ridge, then move five miles off to feed again. If you can get some very recent local intel before you hunt, your odds of being in the right place at the right time are much improved.

Good luck!
