I was doing an ecology project at school and came across these. I'm pretty sure they're hog tracks but figured I'd throw up the picture and get some confirmation. I found them on the north side of the american river just across from the sac state campus. I didn't think there was supposed to be hogs on this side of the valley but...let me know what you guys think.

That's an old "younger buck" track. It appears severely weathered, rain or wind maybe. Hog tracks look like a cross between cattle and deer, more rounded but still pointed on the end.

Well...I feel like an idiot. Thanks for the replies and the chart ltdann. I was under the impression that the dew claws were to far up on the deers hooves to make an impression in the dirt (obviously i'm wrong). And I figured it would be a younger pig who wasn't heavy enough to leave a round imprint. Well, obviously I've never been in the thick of hog sign and your guys' feedback will definitely change some of my past hunting strategies. Thanks for the feedback

The hog's foot doesn't spread as much as that of a deer. The toes are shorter. Even when they run or go down hill the toes are close together.

Key when seeing a track is to look for more of it. Deciding what you see from one imprint is a lot harder than from a series of it. The frequency and placement of the tracks also can help determine what it is.

Now let's hope the hogs move in soon anyway ;)

the dewclaw marks on a hog would be wider than the hoofs
