I've hunted there in the archery area, and some of the rifle hunters returned from their hunt with good bounty. I would recommend their rifle hunt. I think they hunt in or around a barely field.

regarding the high fence area, I generally won't hunt a high fence but Hogs wilds area is about a mile square and full of steep and deep, you can sit on your butt and hope that something comes by or you can hunt hard and go in after them, never a dull moment

I am not sure if this is true or not, but I "heard" that their archery area is not as good as years past in that they allowed rifle hunters within the archery area. that is just what a little bird told me...if it is true or not, I have not a clue.

If it has been raining on the ranch you don't want to be in the archery area. The ground is bare, and the steep hills and mud are dangerous! There are parts of the inclosure that are not bad during the muddy season, but imo the pigs tend to hang out in the roughest area.
As far as the overall experience, I hunted it and it changed my opinion of "high fence". We saw lots of pigs, but it was not a canned hunt. The terrain, mud, and well educated pigs made for a tough hunt.
Minus the mud it would have been a great hunt. Two other guys were there the same time my group was, and one of them slipped down the hill breaking his bow and screwing up his shoulder. One guy in our party of four slipped on the hill and broke his sight on his bow. The mud is dangerous!:skeered:

RWLittle, I think what you heard was that the owner's son occassionally will kill a pig with his rifle in the archery season. I remember he sat on the outside of the fence with a rifle. It made one of my friends nervous, he figured why did the guy have a rifle to finish off a wounded pig.

I'd love to go with a bunch of buddies. I do not like to hunt with total strangers.

One time I went one guy did not like a rooster crowing, so he wrung it's neck.

Otherwise, it is tough place to hunt pigs. You will see them, but there is so much thick brush and it is really steep in places with a waterfall in the lower middle.

It's right in the middle of the San Andreas Fault Zone, that's why it is so rugged. Take a look at the rock formations and how folded and twisted they are.

Fun stuff, that's for sure.

Thanks, Bill. Not sure what the true story was... you know how stories grow. When I was there years ago, the best place to sit and wait was the saddle. I got a great boar there about 5 years ago. I don't care what people say about "canned hunts" ...those pigs are smart and elusive. ..if they even think that they may have seen or smelled your..they are gone!! I'd go back thre anythime. it is a fun place.:archer green:

You pay extra $100 up front for the 2nd hog I believe for the bow hunt.

Coalinga

I grew up in Coalinga. Used to be some good hunting up Los Gato and up 198. Priest Valley has some good hunting as well.

Good Luck,
