Larry Greves from Hogs Wild near Coaling Ca. sent me these new hog hunt prices for 2003.

The prices of archery hunts is $325 for one tag and $400 for two. The rifle prices have gone up to $475 instead of $425.

They must be running out of pigs. Supply and Demand.

I heard that there were not as many hogs as there used to be. However, I have not been there for a couple of years, so I don't know.

Greves's price increase may be the first of several to come if the new budget goes through. Look at the change in the fee for a guide license. Look again at the TRIPLE increase in the price of a guide assistant's license.

Of course, I feel like guided hog hunts are generally overpriced anyway ($400+ for pest control?!?

). But if the prices increase to reflect the new budget, it's hard to argue with that.

With the increase of pig prices, I can save the money from 2-3 hunts and go to Iran and kill as many pure russian boars my heart desires. It would coast me $1000 for the plant ticket (thats the hight end) and around $200 bucks spending money (thats a lot Iranian money). It makes me wonder if its worth going on a 1-2 trophy hunt for $700 here in Cali. Only if the government in Iran wasn't so bad I would probably start a guid service. Just my .02

Shot, I've seen those Iran boars, it would be awesome to have crack at them! I guess we have to wait until after the revolution.

My father, grandfather, and I used to hunt them when we lived there, I really miss the night hunting there, words can't describe it.

It probably costs alot to haul those pigs from the farm and maintain the fence that keeps em in the "hunting" area.

Anyone can go to Texas for a hog hunt. The airline ticket might run you about $200. Some hunt cost $75 a day that include one pig. Any other pig you kill on the same day is an extra $25. Some operation charges $500 for a three day unlimited pig hunt.

Just to make it clear, Larry at Hogs Wild has fair chase hunts for rifle and bow, usually near the barley fields. There is also the cheaper bow hunts behind the wire. If I remember right, if you want to hunt the free range hogs with a bow you pay the rifle price.

Hello everyone I am writing in response to the replies to our price increases and also to clear up many myths that are floating around about our operation. Here are how our prices go. It is now $325 dollars to hunt the fenced in area, with the option to purchase a second tag in advance for $75. For those who feel this is not their cup of tea we offer free ranging hunts for a price of $375. Now in this price one automatically goes for two hogs, and if both are retrieved before the hunt ends then you can go for a third which we had several do. Our rifle hunts which are offered are now $475 for a two day fully guided hunt on approx. 12,000 acres. In this a hunter is guaranteed the opportunity to kill a hog. Of the 100 or so rifle hunters this past year every person had at least one opportunity at a hog within a hundered yards broadside. Now the reason for our recent price changed occured unfortunately due to the increased prices of insurance and workers comp for our empoyees. Anyone who ownes their own business knows what i am talking about,it is rediculous, however we had to cut our losses. Now as far as the pig population goes in the 600 acres. At any given time we figure that there at least 100 head of shooters in the area (100 lbs and up). Granted this number fluxuates depending on hunter success and also predators. Now as far as hunting sucess goes it floats between 30 and 40 percent, behind the fence, and around 30 to 40 percent on the outside archery hunts. So if anyone thinks they can just come up and shoot a pig behind the fence, they are sadly mistaken. I would also like to comment on a previous post. You are correct it does cost money to maintain the fenced inclosure, however we will never turn domestic, or pen raised hogs out, as this could damage our reputation. Anyone who has ever hunted with us i am sure wuld agree with me. Now we can't please everyone and don't intend on doing so, we can only offer what we have and do our best to accomodate everyone. I think i have answered most of the myths that i can think of if anyone else has any questions or comments please feel free to email Larry or Jeremy at Hogswild@thegrid.net Thanks and happy hunting

Oh, the black and white pigs with the curly tails must be some type of russian boar I'm not familiar with. Sorry.

Jerry D. -

I'm not familiar with Hogs Wild so I can't comment on it but keep in mind there are plenty of "black & white" hogs in California. They're not Russian hogs, they're feral hogs but they're still wild. Now, if they've got curly tails & big floppy ears and eat grain out of your hand, they may be a few generations from wild....

I cant comment on Hogs Wild Operation either, never hunted with them. But, anyway you slice it if a operation has pigs with big ol floppy ears and they come to you like a dog when called, thats not hunting. I know of a operation down here by me that is similar to what I described. I hunted there one time and I felt like I was in the guys backyard hunting his pets. Just not my style, but it put meat in my freezer.

Hey Bryan,
I remember that hunt! I felt like I killed someones pet when I took that hog. OUCH! I can only hope that this service is not like that one, however; if those hops are to be put into someones freezer for whatever reason, then maybe it's better that they should live free (within the fence) untill they are killed humanely by a hunter. Rather than with a hammer at a packing plant.
Who knows?

I've done nearly 20 hunts with the Grieves over the last 6-7 years and I've been fortunate enough to kill about a dozen hogs with rifle, pistol, and bow. I've seen every aspect of their operation and trudged through every canyon in their archery-preserve and their 12,000 acre free-range lease.

I can assure everyone that they run a good operation with "genuine" wild hogs, feral, russian, or otherwise. But there are ABSOLUTELY NO floppy-eared, curly tailed, white hogs carrying-on overly-extensive conversations with spiders named Charlotte!!!

And as far as a price increase is concerned, well $375 for a 2 hog/2 day free-ranging archery hunt is still about the best deal in California.

Unless, of course you do prefer the floppy-eared freezer bait which can be found at everyone's favorite slam-dunk bowhunt in Moreno Valley. I've been there, done that, killed a few goats and didn't go back.
