Got home from Idaho Sat. night. after a 12 hour drive. Wish that was as much fun as the hunt. Hunted with my good friend Wogg and his buddy Don. Hit a snafu Tuesday night as we were setting up our camp. Turns out I had forgotten the leg poles to my wall tent back in CA. After a short discussion about what to do for the night, I decided to make the mad dash back to Boise to Lowe's and get some poles. Made it back three hours later and got the tent up. Got the stove setup (Huge Thanks to Ducslayer for that one) and we were set for the night.
Got up Wed to show the area to the others and do some scouting. Didn't see any elk but did talk with several others who were either deer hunting or cow elk hunting. Some were seeing some, some weren't or weren't saying. Don't recall seeing so many camps. Place looked like a zoo. I think all the big fires just north of there had many hunting here. Don't recall seeing that many the year before. Met one youngman that said he was seeing elk but nothing close.
Opening day started with me hunting near where I had taken a bull last year. Ran into a couple of hunters but not too many. Didn't see any elk in the morning but found where a bull had been staying. Found his beds, rubs and tracks. Met up with Wogg and Don and they abandoned their first choice for the morning because of the trucks and atv's parked where they were going to start. Met a friend from Nampa's son on the road and he said his dad saw about 40 head that morning, including 9 bulls. We headed there and it looked like the escalator at the local mall with the amount of people coming up the backside of that hill. Turns out there were at least three herds of elk spotted and lots of bulls. The youngman we had met Wed. had a friend take a 6x6 that morning from way back in. While on top of the mountain, Wogg spotted a herd bedded/feeding on the backside of a ridge about a mile away. Too far to try at that point. We watched them until they fed out and away from us. Cool at least we saw elk.
The next day we decided to go for it and headed down into the canyons we watched the day before. Didn't see anything early, but then when Wogg and I hooked back up about 10, I spied an elk on the ridge above us. Then another one steps out. I tell Wogg he needed to hoof it up there because I figured it was a herd coming out. He did, and shortly there after I see a bull come out. Small one, maybe a 4-pointer or so. They didn't go where Wogg went and I walked an elk trail up the canyon and they must have gone down the canyon below me. It was really brushy there and I couldn't see the bottom. That was all for that day.
Sat. was interesting. Lots more people. Changed to plan B and saw 25 head of elk, all about a mile away in an old burn on the next mountain. Anyone that has hunted Idaho knows what going that distance would be like. Couldn't put horns on any but I'm sure there were bulls there. About 8 or so heard a very loud roar coming up the canyon and turned in time to see an A-10 come over the ridge at tree top level. Flew a couple hundred feet over my head and then I head another one coming. Got a pic of it going by. I thought it was cool. Wogg didn't think so from where he was at but I'll let him tell that. That was all I saw Sat.
Sunday was much the same.
Monday I took time off to run some errands and phone calls. Hunted that evening with Wogg and saw a bull and three cows/calves just before dark. Decided it was too late to try for him. Wish we had now. I think we could have gotten close enough.
Didn't sleep well Monday night and decided to sleep in Tuesday. Got up to hunt a little later and found I had a flat tire. Shot the rest of the day getting that taken care of. It was a nail.
Wed. saw one cow elk and some mulies. Got to see a buck rubbing some brush and then heard him and another one we saw chasing a doe in and out of a pocket of trees fighting. Then the smaller came right by me after getting his butt kicked. That was cool.
Did a killer hike Thursday morning that produced nothing but tired legs and a sore back. Getting tired of toting that day pack by now.
Friday we decided to hit the bull we saw Monday. Some other hunters were putting a drive on in that canyon and I saw the bull and his group across the canyon heading out. Bummer. Ended listening to that group on the radios telling each other where elk were. Ended up seeing another bull (from their talk) but again way too far away. Ended hunting about noon and went and packed camp.
Good hunt, saw about 50 or so elk, but just couldn't get on the right ridge. I'll post some pics later.

Sounds like a tiring trip, those hills are murder! Also sounds like a great time even without an elk on the ground. At least you were seeing them even if you couldn't get get in on them. Can't wait to see the pics Monty

Hey Kentuck,

I was hoping that you guys got to tag one this year. I didn't see that much Elk and only stalked one bull. 39 is one of the most popular units about 3000 tags sold each year. I shoulda bought a deer tag as it is a prime unit for Mulie and I saw a beautiful 4x4 that I would have had an easy shot on.

Better luck next year!

Dave,

I stopped by the Boise River WMA and the guy there said the snows in early Oct. drove a lot of deer down earlier than usual. Last year I cut one set of deer tracks where we hunted. This year, deer sign was almost as thick as the elk sign. Almost. Did see a couple of nice 4X4's taken.

A-10 flying by (tried to get the pic as went over my head but man they are fast!), another rub, an elk bed and one of the many, many elk trails I followed. Found out early in the hunt a lot of times it was easier to follow elk trails than hiking the hills the way many walke them....

Nice shots. I love the tree the bear scratched up. Must have been a good sized one.

Hey Kentuck,

On Sunday I returned to Boise to resupply and clean-up. I drove into the mandatory F&G checkstation down by the reservoir. I talked to the F&G guys and they said the heavy snows drove a lot of Elk down with the deer. Deerhunters reported seeing 100s of Elk at lower than usual elevations.

When I came back to B.N.F., I went to Thorn Creek Rd below Idaho City and set up camp. I saw a lot more tracks and sign and tracked two elk for 2 days. 3 young guys shot the spike with 5-6 shots...then a hour later they are walking out. One has packed what appears to be both front legs in his pack...with hide, hoofs and all still attached...that was funny.

There was sign for a larger bull, but unlike the spike, his tracks were heading straight out of the area. I saw another Elk taken by guys on horseback in the Granite Creek area near Swanholm Peak Rd. They had a big setup. 4-5 Canvas tents in a row, 6 trucks, corral with pack horses, etc.

The odd thing to see is guys with big RV toyhauler/trailers...there was one in Queens River, where I went on 10/30 and this guy ran his generator for hours on end every night. Not my idea of elk camp. Plus, he is next to the Sawtooth wilderness Area and his atvs would be illegal in there...odd.

Well, to each his own. After opening weekend, I tried to stay below 6000 feet and around cold spots because of the warm weather. Still on Wed when I went to a peak at 6800 feet off of Swanholm rd, I was in tee-shirt it was so warm.

I also tried bacon and peanut-butter sandwiches and they were good...beats granola bars to hell. Still lost a little over 10 lbs from all the hoofing.

Oh well, on to pheasant season.

Dave,

You weren't too far from us out of Idaho City. One thing I found very interesting is that by Sunday evening all the camps on top had left. I think by Monday we were the only camp on top. It was crazy before that though. Camp next to us had a triple-axle camper trailer there. I don't see how he got it up the mountain without tearing it up. They were from Texas. We couldn't figure out why everyone pulled out by Sunday with only about three elk taken for all those people. My friend from Nampa said most likely it was because many had other places to try. I know one guy told me he hunts on top the first 4 days and then heads down canyon after that because the elk get pushed down the criks. Makes sense from what we saw but we were still seeing elk where we were at. Just couldn't get in the right spot at the right time.

Some lucky elk were killed also. Two guys got 6-pointers on their very first elk hunt. One guy got a big 6 right off the road and was able to load the thing up in the truck after deciding to just take a drive during the afternoon on the opener. I think Wogg and I were able to come up with 15 elk that had been killed very near where we hunted the first 4 days of season. I'd bet the stats will be up this year.

I hear ya about the temps. It was 41 degrees on top the last morning. That didn't help things.

Thanks for that Wogg. Just to state the facts, guiding Wogg to an elk was tremendously hard work and after a week of doing this some shut-eye was much needed. I still don't think I slept for an hour. I think you monkeyed with my watch while I cat-napped! And scouting from the truck. Let me remind you that this was after our little 4-hour "hunt" down that trail you thought would be good. Turned out to be the hike from you know what. My legs were not getting out of the truck after that little jaunt. Besides, I still say those "stumps" across the canyon were elk!

Upper, most of the coolers in the truck were empty. We had room for the elk but I am seriously thinking a trailer would be nice about now!
