Hornady SST bullets for elk

Does anyone have any experience with Hornady SSt bullets? I would like to know your experience with theese bullets. Are they any good? Thank You.

I was hoping someone would have responded by now. I called Hornady and of course they said they were a great bullet for Elk, but I'm leaning towards they're Interbond bullet which is suppose to hold 90% of its weight.

The SST's are sure priced right for my .300 Win Mag!

SST's aren't an elk bullet, they are for lighter game like deer and antelope. I would equate them to a Nosler Ballistic Tip, and Nosler does not recommend them on elk. You want a quality bonded bullet like Partition, Accubond, Interbont. A buddy of mine shot an elk with a Ballistic Tip last year and it didn't work out well for him, had to call off the search at night and go back in the morning to find it and finish it off. Go with one of the 3 above or Barnes and you won't be sorry.

I am in need of info like this also . . . I am going to be muzzleloading for Elk in Colorado and they don't allow for saboted bullets so it looks like a PowerBelt and I was looking at the Platimum series in 300gr. Anyone have any info on this bullet?

What caliber are you shooting? I'm planning on using the 200 gr SST out of my .338 this year on my hunt. I've used the SST on deer and antelope out of my .270 with spectacular results. I've killed elk only with Partitions, but the SST has such better down range performance than the Partition, I've elected to make the switch this year. The Hornady Superformance out of my .338 still has 1,431 ft lbs of energy at 700 yards. The Federal Vital Shok with a 210 gr Partition has only 988 ft lbs of energy at the same range. Having been on this hunt before, I know I can expect to have 500 to 700 yard shots.

I guess my answer to you is I have enough confidence in Hornady and the SST to take it on my hunt. I would be reluctant to use an SST on elk in something less than 30 caliber.

Better make totally sure of the legality of the Powerbelt in Colorado. The last I heard, no plastic skirt was allowed which would eliminate that bullet. You may have to shoot something like a Thompson/Center Maxi Ball (a great bullet) or a patched round ball.

I would look at the Hornady GMX bullet rather than the sst.

I agree that the SST is not enough bullet for elk (generally). My favorite bullet right now is the 168 gr. Tipped TSX in my .300 win mag (handload): it's like Thor's hammer! I dropped a 700+ lb. cow elk last year, running at more than 200 yards, with that bullet. In all I fired two shots and two animals were on the ground. The Interbond is a good bullet, the Nosler Accubond is also a great bullet.

I think if you are looking to elk hunt the perfect bullet might be the Accubonds. I like the Barnes Triple Shock but they dont have a flat trajectory like the others. For long range shooting you will find that these bullets tend to drop lower than others. The GMX line seems to be a flatter shooting round on paper but I have not shot those yet. Although they look extremely similar to Triple Shocks. On the other hand the Accubonds shoot extremely flat and you can hunt anything from thin skinned to thick.

The Tipped TSX has as high a ballistic coefficient as the Accubond and shoots at least as flat a trajectory. So don't let that stop you. They're both great bullets, and I've killed elk with both.

I've never shot the GMX or the TSX, but on paper they sure run out of gas around 400 yards in .338.

I've killed 3 elk with 162grn SST's out of my 7mmRemMag. I killed my bull in 08 with 150grn ballistic tips out of my 7mm. People would say that is not an elk load either. None ran more than 15yrds.
