For you Norcalboys, I'm heading to Hoss Hog for a lil archery hunt on friday. I'll report back if it is cool or not. I've heard great things.

Tell us if it's high fenced or fair chase with no fences.

Serious? Feeders? Is that legal?

I have no philosophical objection to that as long as it's legal, I'm just curious. I hunted over feeders in Texas, had dozens of pigs come in and I was never able to fire an arrow. Those were the smartest pigs I've ever hunted. One move and they were gone.

Hopefully I can get the Halter off before we take photo's. JK. I'm ok with it because what the heck else am I doing those days. I can't shoot a pig in my office. Besides it still sharpens your skills.

Hey, we're not knockin' it...i think it'd be fun to see a bunch of hogs and like Nate said, odds are it ain't gonna be that easy. Be sure to take some good pics and post up your thoughts on their operation.

best of luck.

Ihave talked to the guys at GREAT OUTDOORS in Redding, and I thought they said that it was either high fence or a free roam area?

Not sure but I'd imagine that if the place is high-fenced you would be able to hunt over feeders... Might not even need a license....

Reggie,

I hunted there on the last weekend of October;made my first kill with my recurve there. It is fenced. It is an awesome hunt and the owners (Mike and Tony) are really good guys, they will make sure that you will have a good time. There are some bruiser pigs there!! I posted a photo and story around early November in this forum.

There are about 7 feeders there and each one has a stand by it. 3 of the 7 stands are what they call "taj mahal" style, in that they are so plush and can easily fit 3 hunters if need be. I hunted on stand #1 and saw a monster of a pig the first night. My buddy saw about 10 huge boars at stand #6 on the 2nd evening. To be honest, any of the stands will produce. But if you want my advice try # 5 or #6.

Good Luck.. and don't worry... you will have a blast!!!!

How did you know I got some AS???? Sorry for not posting. I have been swamped. Ok here is deal. Myself and three friends went up on friday around noon. I was little leery with the high fence and all. We show up and one of the owners, Mike, meets us at the gate. We go in and get to the camp. It is a beautiful area. Probably only 15 miles off I-5 at Maxwell.

This is the area where you hang out at. There is a fire pit and after the hunts we would sip down a few. It was sure nice having a fire because on the Golden Ram ranches I hunt we are not allowed to have fires and that sucks. Anyway we went out friday night and set up in the treestands which are in fact first pin from feeders. The scoop is that the shooters don't come in until last light. There are other smaller hogs that come to the feeders but they are little. My buddy and I are in one blind and right at last light a group of hogs come in. There was one white hog in the group and I had to take him because he was the only one I could ethically shoot due to poor light through my peep. So I drill him at 30 yards at an extreme qaurtering away shot. My rage 3-blade smokes em' with a pass through.

The next morning I was sitting at the base of one of the stands and I said to myself that I would hold out for a monster. BUT, I was sitting there and a Russian came in that probably only weighed 150 lbs but his hair was sticking up (IE: Razorback) and I just couldn't pass him up so I took him with an 18 yard shot. He was bad ass looking. Unfortunately I don't have his photo's yet to show you. So far all of this has taken place near the feeders. Around 10 am my buddy and I started to walk around because it is like 600 or 800 acres or something like that. The owner had told us that they had 3 Dall sheep in there and one of them had big horns. While we were walking all of a sudden we see them. They are coming right at us from about 100 yards so I ready for the shot but they never made it over the last ridge. I sneak up to look for them and they disappeared. I continue up the ranch road and see a Barbados sheep with his butt to me at approx 150 yards. The wind was howling probably 30 miles an hour but right into my face.
I start my stalk and get to within 50 yards and he still has yet to turn around. I get on my hands and knees and crawl. I get to about 40 yards and my knees are killing me so I decide to stand back up and continue my stalk. Ends up I walk to 23 yards and decide to draw and the wind is just rippin so he has no idea that I'm there but his ass is right at me.
I start going sideways and he see's movement and turns absolutely broadside and I nail him. He ran up a hill and I made another sneak and drilled him with an assurance arrow. He went down on the spot.

It was an awesome stalk. My buddy and see 2 pigs that probably went 350-400 lbs from about 140 yards. They were like an old wise Mule deer buck because they were in an area that was so thick we did a 2 hour stalk and were 15 FEET away but couldn't shoot due to the inability to get an arrow through this thick stuff.
In summary this was an awesome adventure. Here are two pigs that one of my friends got.[attachment=47694:tims.jpg]
Of the two other hunters that were with us, one of them missed a shot and the other never took a shot. I think next time we go we might try to shoot a meat pig the first night and then just do spot and spook for the rest of the trip.

The owners are two guys, Mike and Tony. They were just excellent outfitters. The worked sooooooooo hard helping us bloodtrail and skin, etc. They are archery guys so they understand all that we talk about. There were two other nice gentelman in camp with us and one of them got a pig. Overall I grade it "A+". I would highly recommend it to anyone. It is great for the advanced archer or the first timer. Be reminded that even though you are over a feeder you still must make an archery shot.

Glad you had a nice time. I had a great time there back in October; and you are right in saying that Mike and Tony are good guys. They are serious bow hunters who treat you like a best friend while you are there and do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. I am definately going back ....soon!!

Good stuff, the toughest hog hunt I have ever been on was behind a high fence, them hogs in East Texas were like nothing I had ever seen, I hunted 18 plus hours a day and never drew back on a pig, though heard and temporarily saw quite a few, especially at night by the light of the moon.

Now you got something to keep your goats company.
