I think what it boils don to is exactly what bayedsolid said, they have hardly ever been dogged around here. This is basically bearhound country and they do not want their hounds running hogs. No one uses dogs around here for hogs. Bayedsolid is probably 20 mi. from me. We had no water to speak of where I hunt so we had no hogs up here for close to a year. They will quit rallying up after the dogs are on them a few times. What happens is hogs are a social animal and tend to run in herds. Rallying up, they can fend off most predators and it works until that predator becomes several domesticated dogs that have little to no survival instincts and won't back off. Then comes the guy with the gun and it doesn't take them long to figure they better get while the gettins good.

Bayedsolid, yes, all I use is airedales. Been breeding them for about 16 years and the will take a take and hold it. Totoally silent until the game is jumped. Makes for shorter races for this old boy.

The first time they hit a hot track they were moving out and treed it way down in a canyon. Took me about two hours to locate them and they were still treeing. The second bear would have killed Winchester if I hadn't been so close. I was comeing back fron deer hunting to go to work and both dogs were in the truck with me. All hell broke loose all of a sudden and I hit the brakes and got out because they were climbing all over me because my window was down and they wanted out. They jumped that bear about fifty yards up the hill and the fight was on. Lucky for them I was on my way. I thought they had winded a hog. Layed Winchester up for 3 mo. Why do you ask?

Hnterjohn, I have been around a few of the boards but many of them seem to wear thin pretty shortly. You know, arguments and such instead of hunting and good times.

Just curious as to how an Airedale would react. We've had a bear cross in front of the dogs before and the dogs checked it out as it took off down the hill but they didn't bark and pretty much left it alone. It was a little suprising they didn't do more but they were clean dogs so I guess they figured something new was trash. I'm sure it made them scratch their heads anyway. They are pretty gritty so I wouldn't want them on a bear anyhow.
