It looks slightly bigger than one I just shot. Mine was 250# so I would guess it to be 275#. I would be surprised if it was over 300#. It could be, but I don't think so.
look at the size of the head and snout, good size for sure, 275 or 300, no matter what a pound or two diff. it was still a good size hog. congrats to your cousin!....tra
180-230lbs. I gave it a wide range in weight because of the 2 pictures.
In the first pic it looks as if the person behind the hog is so far enough away he couldnt touch the hog if he reached out to it. This makes the hog look much bigger than it really is. The first pic makes me think 180lbs.
The second pic there is real reference to size, at least in the head. That pic gives me the 230lb guess.
As for the hog being 300lbs, Id be willing to bet real money it wasnt over 250lbs with guts.
My guess is that pig goes in the mid 200's. It would be easier to get an accurate estimate if he wasn't standing behind it. The shooter looks to be a couple feet behind it the first pic, and maybe a foot or two behind it in the second pic. Had he be leaning against or had his hand on it, I could probably get a better read.......
You'll rarely encounter a 300+ pound pig after July in California. They start to lose weight after that point (depending where you are), then start regaining again in October-November. Heaviest pigs should be encountered around April-May. Depends on where you are in the state, of course. Did I already mention that?
I don't understand why people want to take pictures standing 5-10 feet behind their animal. Just sit next to it and be happy with what you got!
I'd say 200+... I remember the 255 lb boar we got a few years ago at FHL, everyone was estimating 280-300+. Lots of overestimating and looks of that's it when it settled on 255. And yes, I was one of the ones over estimating... :smiley-mouse:
Yea, I know about holding fish away from the body, to make them look bigger. However, I can see he's squatting behind the pig, and he does look close enough to touch him... So I would guess he was over 250... The guy looks like he weighs less than the hog by far...
Cazador, that isn't even the same picture that was orignally posted. The picture you posted does the pig justice in that it isn't trying to be deceptive on the size of the animal. He may not be 5+ feet from the pig in the orignal picture, but he isn't "right" behind it either. It is a great pig for sure, and i'm not trying to take that away from him.
I stated that because I have seen a lot of pictures (especially on another website) where people are sitting well behind the animal to make it look "big". One guy even says he got a 300+ pound boar yet he is literally a hop skip and a jump behind the pig. Another has a guy sitting behind the pig with his knees up. And judging by that picture he could stretch is lets out and still not put his feet on the pig (in my opinion). They're still big, but not as big as we're led to believe... in my opinion.
If someone wants to do that then that is their choice, but don't exxaggerate the size of the pig/deer/whatever just because you're miles behind the animal (figure of speech). I don't think some of the 300+ pound pigs people report are really that big (especially if you don't get them weighed).
Hey Calijeep I didn't have that pic that cazador posted... U could definitely get a better idea with the pic that cazador posted... By the way my cuz is about 5'8 and weights around 180lb...
What is the real weight?.................I've killed many boars with 2"-3.5" tusks. Some boars have very long tusks but do not have the mass of other shorter tusks boars. Those long tusks boars are not as big as the big mass shorter tusk boars. Some boars have a big shoulder girt, short in length, and a small rear end, looks like the cartoon tasmania devil. Those boars are very hairy which makes them look really big, but lighter in weight. Some boars especially up in northern california have a long body, equal size shoulder girt and rearend. Not too much hair on their body, lots of bald spots infact. Those are the ones I've seen with the heavy mass tusks. They are the ones I've seen in the 300+ lbs. So far I've only killed three in that class. One I killed that tipped the scale at 392 dressed. I have to hoist it up in a tree with the truck, then back the truck under it to load in the bed. That thing looks like a cow. In the 6 ft pickup bed, the snout touched the tailgate and the hams touched the cab. Never have I seen one like that in central california.
Judging by the picture, this boar seemed to have a big shoulder girt and a small rearend. Pretty hairy to be one of those baldy boars. The mass of the tusks doesn't look very big and long in the pic. Looks similar to the one I killed last year and the one I killed two weekends ago in FHL. The one I killed last year was 205 dressed on the scale in FHL skinning shack and the one two weekends ago was 180 dressed. I'm sticking with my original guess of 205 dressed. Not seeing the boar in person, I could be misjudged, but I'm sure I'm not that far off.
