I think under 500 as well so I'll play jeopardy and guess 451. I think what Rancho Loco meant is that that pig is so FAT and its shape is such that it looks very un-feral. I have no idea what the story is but that pig does not look like it has been foraging in the wild unless, the "Wild" is a includes access to the farmer's grain barrel.
The real point was to check field guessing of weight. According to Keith this one tipped the scales much higher then the 500 pound guess buy his guide. He did say they had been chasing it for days. It is a ranch that does have a lot of pigs and I'm sure there are feeders going just like on the unfenced property I hunt in Texas. If you saw the show they passed on many that were smaller trying to harvest this one the guide said they had been seeing for days.
Hogs can get pretty dam fat on an abundant acorn crop. She ain't gutted yet so she might also be full of piglets. If that truly is an OLN show, I'd imagine it's legit as they wouldn't chance the reputation they've built shooting farm raised hogs, unless they're Texas of course
If they have been seeing this hog for days then what stopped them from shooting it? You don't CHASE a hog that looks like that, you just walk up to him and dump it.Think about it guys, the hog had to have been nice enough to stand still long enough for someone to spray paint it black.
Ahhh.. Mike... Come on down here to the great lone star state when you get a chance.. Be sure to bring plenty of water a good headlamp and a REALLY sharp knife!! I will let you have a try on some of our "farm raised hogs".. They are really tame and wouldnt harm a fly... Just for sport I will pull the dogs off right about the time you get up to the little piggy.. We want you to try and have a sporting time...
I did see that episode as well. When the pig came into view...it looked way more like a barnyard animal as opposed to a wild boar.
Either way, it is a lot of pork.
I ain't second-guessing the show or the hunters, but ya'll ought to remember that the majority of the "wild boar" we're hunting aren't but a few generations removed from the farmyard.
There are some serious fatties down in SC and Georgia that would probably not be far off of the quarter-ton mark.
