Is it customary to tip a pig guide? If so what is the going rate?
Thanks

Yes as long as it's a good hunt. If they know what they are doing and you kill a hog or Atleast get a shot at one. I'd say 20%.

I asked the same question in the past and here is a link to the thread/answers I got.

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/showthread.php/212565-Tipping-on-guided-hog-hunts

Bottom line is yes and I'd say it is highly "effort" and person dependent. I'd estimate it runs between 10% and 15% but higher to 20%. Clearly a two hour hunt where you have paid $600 for up to days to get on opportunity is different (less work) than when a guide takes a disabled person out for two days and works his butt off trying to get the client an animal. The latter would deserve 20% or maybe even more.

I'm in the 20% crowd as a baseline and have tipped more and less based on the guide's performance and ATTITUDE. If I hate hunting with you, it'll be reflected in your tip.

I agree with the good hunt, which doesn't necessarily entail killing a hog. Sometimes they just aren't there. I would say always tip, but if you don't shoot a hog or get a shot at one, I'd tip around 10% with the rate for a "successful" hunt being around 20%. Never used a guide hunting, but I have fishing in Montana. So bottom line, I would always tip.

It all really depends on the guide and how the hunt went. I tip very well on hunts where the guides do their job well and game is taken. I tip according to my gut feeling about the gide. Those who do what they say and show me game to shoot get better tips than those who just drive us arround alot with nothing to show for our time...

I start at 10% and go from there. It depends on the guide and the quality of the
hunt as others have mentioned.

I usually end up giving a 20% tip.

Thanks for all of your answers. I did not tip on the spot but mailed him a check and letter of apology for my ignorance because clearly it is the right thing to do.

I always ask the outfit booking the trip what they expect. My wife and I did an off-shore fishing trip out of the FL Keys, where the Captain and First Mate worked their arse's off to get us in fish (Dolphin or mahi-mahi). Some 30 miles or so out of port, we found the fish. Ended up the wife was in the flying bridge, and we have a 35# Bull and 2, 25# females hooked at the same time. Needless to say, I was willing to tip for the 60+ pounds of fillets we brought home. Nothing under 12# was kept.

Ask up-front, then go from there. I've left small tips at 5star outfits, and tipped a 20 year old chef in the Keys 30+% since he prepared us an outrageous dinner, and had a baby coming.

When in doubt, I always pay. I've received much better service on the second trip. Don't think the guides don't keep notes.

Have fun out there, I'm off to check my Pork shoulder on the grill .......................

Thanks Inchr48, that last line about better service second time is exactly what prompted me to send in the tip via mail. Congrats on your bull and females!
