Thomas' (Henriksson) friend decided to go hunt while waiting for him to get there. "Ooops, Sorry Thomas, but I just went for a drive"
Scott's first pig and the first pig to hang at camp. Time line: Set up tent by 1, sit around for awhile until 2:30, get tip from Bighorn67 (Dave), leave at 3, get pig at 3:15. He even had missed first the pig and got a second chance.
I just finished butchering Pigzilla and unpacking the truck. I don't think I've ever slept better than I did last night.
First off I want to thank Speckmisser for putting this thing together...YOU DA MAN!!!! Thanks to all the JHO'ers for making it a great weekend. It was cool to meet up with those of you I've hunted with before and meet the guys I haven't.
Now the story....
After setting up camp Speck, Mudwalker, DILPRXO, and I headed up to a ridge we've all got shot pigs from before. We split up and I headed out onto a long ridge that had lots of good glassing areas. About halfway down I saw a lone pig feeding about 600yds away. I hurried along and at about 400yds I noticed two other hunters stalking it so I sat down and watched. When they got close all hell broke loose. Lots of shooting and hollering. I watched 4 other pigs bail out of the brush during the commotion. I worked a little farther out the ridge and saw 3 of the pigs coming back about 20 minutes later. They were about 350yds out and I was seriously debating a shot when they started walking away again. I walked about 100yds farther down the ridge and saw a large boar feeding in an opening. I worked my way about 50yds closer, ranged him at 234yds and unfolded my shooting sticks. As I sent the bullet on it's way my scope filled with bright orange muzzle blast. When the scope settled, my pig was cartwheeling to the bottom of the canyon. WOOHOO
I gutted him and started dragging. I dragged by myself till midnight. I had only covered about a half mile and my flashlight was fading fast. I put in my spare batteries, left the hog and went for help. I sat at DILPRXO's truck(he and Speck were out looking for me) for a bit when OneTrack and Buckeye rolled by. They were taking tires to a stranded buddy and told me they'd be back. They showed up at the same time Speck and DILPRXO did and we headed up after the hog. Three guys dragging and the use of Speck's toboggin sled made things go a whole lot faster. We still didn't get it back to the truck till 2:30am. OneTrack....I was so glad to hear you got a pig and didn't have to drag it after you spent all night dragging mine. Buckeye....I wish you had connected. Next year when you do I owe you bigtime!!!
Here's my pig.....180lbs field dressed with 2-1/8" choppers.
Awesome trip... Speckmisser, great job settignn this up. Thanks to Jesse and the rest of the JHO prostaff. Rich (GW69) and myself did not connect onthis trip, but we did see hogs, but the timing was a bit off on all occasions. Looking forward to the next one. At least my gambrel got some action (One Track's and Speckmisser's hogs). Fritz, you know how to cook a mean elk roast, dutch oven style to boot. BTW, Brent , Phillip gave me the gambrel this afternoon.
It was good to put faces to names.
Watch out piggies,
because I know where you hang out now...
Thanks for the kind words guys. I really had a blast. Wmidbrook, that pic you posted looks great, you don't get a sense of how big that thing was from the one I posted earlier.
I was really impressed with what a great group of guys were out there this weekend. I wish I had gotten a chance to talk to more people on Sat, but unfortunately I spent half the night trying to stifle coughing from a cold I've been fighting for the last week.
I wouldn't have gone at all if it hadn't been for Oneclearshot assuring me that he'd show me the ropes and give me a hand. I also wouldn't have made it too far down those Jeep trails in the Porsche if I hadn't been able to hitch a ride with Wmidbrook. Now I can't wait for next year's hunt, when's the next one Spec?
Vandal, those are some serious looking teeth on that mean looking old hog. Very beautiful country Rancho Loco, wish we could have been there. Again, congratulations to all who scored and a firm keep pushing to those who weren't, your time is coming!
