Mel,

Tejon doesn't allow non-hunting guests on the PORs or Ham Slams. Kind of a drag, but I do see where they're coming from. Since the whole thing is non-guided, some yo-yo will have his "non-hunter" shooting from the car window, or providing "backup for a recovery"... and screws things up for everybody.

Your packet is in my mailbox right now, and the rules/regs are all included there.

Thanks, Speck.

Yeah, that will be a drag not having someone there. Oh well, I'm sure I can team up with someone.

Thanks again, i'll be looking for the packet.

There will be plenty of help there, Mel. And don't hesitate to ask. Most of us will be on radio (FRS). We'll coordinate a channel on the first day.

The radio was great, but I would have much rather ran into him after dropping our pigs into the great abyss. His winch would have been a life/leg/back saver. Maybe I'll be smarter this time and shoot one like Reddog5 (Cute, petite one (pig that is) had to clarify). I've been counting the days for the last few months and can't wait to get back out there. See you guys there and hopefully we'll be in the 50-75% success rate (as a group) this year. Mel, don't worry about not having a buddy with you from the get go, I'm sure any one of us will be glad to let ya hitch a ride or do some dragging for ya if need be. Maybe I'll actually take my own camera with me this year, as Gnn961 has a nasty habit of erasing his entire memory card on his (J/K). Had to rub that one in a lil bit, besides I'd much rather have a long distance pic of me skinning my first hog than a close up one of me, the hog and the area where I dropped him. 4 weeks from today.......can't wait

...Spoke with Mr. SuperDuty today. Dave are you gonna commit yet? I plan on being in Frazier Park early on Friday morning. If any JHO'er wants to grab some breakfast before we head to the gate, post up.....

Ok, thanks for the offers guys. I was hoping to know if I was going to make this trip buy yesterday, i'm still waiting.

Speck. What's the latest I can get the check and packet back to you? I think you live close to my work, maybe I can swing it by your place if mailing it will take too long.

Thanks,

Heya Mel,

I posted up about the deadline in another thread. Bottom line, I need everything NO LATER THAN May 20. I work in Pleasanton and live near Fremont, so if you want to bring it by in person, drop me an email and we'll work out the details.

To everyone else...

Doesn't look like we're gonna sell out this year, but for those who've been hemming and hawing... time's a-wasting! There are less than two weeks to make up your mind, fill out the apps, and get them in the mail to me. Mail often takes up to four days to get here. If your app is in the mail but doesn't arrive before I send stuff to Barbara, you're probably out of luck. She's been great about working with us and dealing with exceptions, as those of you who hunted last year may remember. But her schedule is extremely tight this spring with other hunts and trade shows, so if you miss the window, you're probably not going to get any breaks.

If you haven't requested an app yet, now's the time. Thinking logistically, if you send me an email request TODAY it's probably Wednesday or Thursday before you receive your packet. Doesn't give you much time to turn it back around to me.

There's beau coup room for 50 hunters at Tejon, so don't worry about crowding. Ask any of the hunters from last year if that's a concern. So come on out, let's shoot some pigs AND shoot some bull!

It's gonna be great!

Thanks, Speck.

I'll let you know. I pass through Pleasanton everday on my way home from work. Once I know for sure if i'm making it, meeting in Pleasanton would probably be the best bet. I'll let you know.

Thanks again!

Speck,

I've never hunted Tejon, so all my info is pretty much coming from here. Are most of the shots between 100-300 yrds? Sounds like Tejon is STEEP with some Deep canyons. I'm assuming that beating the brush (if your a Mt Goat) with a pistol might be in your favor. Than again, not know the ranch layout driving around until you find them and stalking or jumpshooting is probably the key. Sounds like I need to stock up on my rope collection.

Myself and alot of other guys acted on the intel last year that pointed to the hogs feeding (nocturnal) on the south side of a long ridge, and then going over to the steep north side to bed during the day.

I was able to jump mine at first light going from the south side to the north side, in a wide bowl that was pretty open. I had a pretty good drag to a two track. I was able to go and get my truck and bring it down.

Alot of guys concentrated on the north side of the ridge, and some guys were on hogs at pretty close quarters, but nasty drags.

Then guys like Hronk went in a different direction than everybody and tagged out quick.

The best thing to do is get out there, toss up your tent and boogie up to do some quick recon. There's pigs all over there, so you just need to find some fresh sign and go from there. Also, at the orientation, the tejon folks will prolly mention some pretty fresh intel to go on.

The key last year was food, water and beds. This year they'll prolly be spead out more than usual due to all the rain, unless we get a heat wave pretty quick.

Rancho summed it up pretty good.

There can be a fair number of 200-300 yard shots, but that's not a requirement. I've had shots from 15 to 300 yards, and passed on longer ones (I usually pass on 300 yards, but... well, you had to be there). I carry the .44 in addition to my rifle, and missed a hog with it the year before last at about 20 yards (shot went low).

The most productive areas are steep and rugged. As Rancho said, with all this rain, they'll be spread out. I just talked to Barbara, and she said it was like a rainforest up there. There is also some road damage, so unless they can get in there to do some repairs, some areas may be walk-in only.

Rope is your friend. Something to help with the drag is a good idea too. I had my sled last year, and Scott got some use out of it. I have a new toy this year, the "Dead Sled", and can't wait to give it a try.

The best tactic by far is to scout early and find good sign, then make a morning and evening stand. The rest of the day can be spent on the roads, scouting and glassing, then doing a stalk on anything you see.

It's a HUGE place. Don't do like I did the first time I went, and refuse to road hunt. I burned a day and a half in a dead spot before I finally took some good advice, and hit the roads to find my hog.

I've got an extra. Sandy bought me one for my B-day and it arrived with a little nick out of one end. Cabela's sent me another and told me to keep the damaged one. I'm sure I could be talked out of it after a drink or two

if you're interested.

Haven't had the chance to use one yet, but I'll be bringing it along just in case. Speck's tobaggin (and you and Buck-eye)sure made the drag alot easier last trip.

In the evening, go to the eastern end of Bear Trap canyon. The hogs come of the north slope of the south side ridge and cross just before the 3 way fork in the road, where the thick stuff is. You'll hear them grunting and squealing as they come down the slope.

Wish I could go but I had already committed to the Big Bear Carp bow shoot.

Anybody who picks carp over hogs...

Just raggin' ya, Jesse. But you will be missed in June, man!

OneTrack, I picked up a "DeadSled" at the SHOT Show in January. I told him about the damage to my sled from last year, andhe "guaranteed" that the Dead Sled would hold up against that kind of use all day long. Told him I'd take him up on it when a bunch of redneck friends and I hit the Tejon Ranch, and I'd write all about it. So he gave me one and said, "have at it!"

Hopefully it'll get at least 15 or 20 good drags over the June 4 weekend. I hope to give it a try this weekend at Chopper's too.

Looked for a website, but I didn't see one. I think Cabelas was gonna pick 'em up, though.

Woohoo! Is it time yet?
