kodiakoutdoors,

I have only hunted Bull Elk in the past, and on every occasion the cows seem to be easy to find. They respond well to cow calls, they usually lead the herd with the bulls following. If you are in good elk country, you wont have any trouble finding cow elk. Good Luck on your hunt.

Didn't know you needed a method to hunt Cow Elk. Here (CO) you just bump into them all the time. Their pretty much everywhere.

I'm no expert though I do have a great tape on the subject called "Calling all cows." They have great calling strategies for bringin' in the cows which adds a whole new level of excitement to the "find a herd and pop one" strategy especially if you plan on using your bow.

Good luck~!

Roll around in the mud after you've peed in the mud and learn to bugle and grunt

. You also have to stink real bad and have a bad disposition. Get all that together and they'll come to you looking for action.

Locate them by calf calling..... they will answer back. Then move in on the sounds be careful of the wind they will be looking for you. The idea is to spot them before they spot you. If you can't get a clear shot; this will be the time to calm yourself down and get into a good shooting position. Remember they will be looking for a lost calf that was seperated from the herd. One or 2 more soft "crying mews" will bring one out in the open. I have used this when scouting with success & took my last cow elk this way.

One time while turkey hunting I heard some cows "talking" to each other; so just for fun I tried to imitate a calf call with my mouth diaphragm turkey call & all of a sudden I had 3 cows & a spike bull step into the clearing just feet away from me.

Good Luck ! - I hope you get one.
