Since I have not hunted or got a hog yet, (though I did get a javelina in new mexico) how are you hunting them ? by tracking and spotting, sitting and glassing, calling? I have seen boar calls do you use them? on boars or sows or both? I appreciate the guideance. I would like to attend a jho hunt soon but not without a little practice on my own, I don't want to show up knowing nothing.

Rydtime,

Actually, one of the best ways to learn is to do exactly that...<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>

If you can shoot your chosen weapon, and you understand some basics about hunting (especially safety), then the best way to learn the specifics is to get out and do it with some folks who do know... whether it's guided hunts or with a group like the JHO crew.

Trial and error is great for what it is, but trying to learn hog hunting on your own and on public land in CA is gonna be a long learning curve and an exercise in frustration. Not that it's a waste of time, nor do I want to discourage you from making the effort... but there's nothing wrong with showing up to a hunt knowing what you don't know and willing to learn. I know that most folks are usually very willing to share what they know with someone who knows nothing, rather than sharing with someone who knows everything.

Point is, don't be ashamed to take advantage of a veteran's knowledge. In my opinion, the best way to learn is to get started right, and then build those skills on your own.

wild boar hunt at Chopper's (WILD HOG ADVENTURES) here in hollister, ca., I think it would be the perfect place for your first hog hunt! 4000 privet acers of prime pig habitat. with 6 hunters that breaks down to 750 acers per hunter, its like haveing the place to yourself when your out hunting and a great lodge to stay in. if you need anymore info just email me....................tra

I would actually love to go to presidents day with the JHO crew if there are any spots open I will be in. I especially don't want to sound like I don't want to learn because I really do and from a seasoned veteran would be the best. I learned to deer hunt from my dad and we still hunt together. But have never had the opportunity to pig hunt, but now I do and am really excited. To the roman archer I do not have a bow yet though I do plan on getting one and learning how to shoot one. I can't wait till the bass pro shop opens it's only about 10 nmiles from my house. I really really appreciate the offer and definitely will take you up on that as soon as I get a bow and learn to shoot it. As a side not this site is great and what a great bunch of people here.

If you can sneak up on a deer you can definitely hunt hogs.
