Congrats on that monster. The 3rd and 4th pics are really telling as to the true size of that beast. After seeing those bullets I might be switching to barnes for next years hunts. That's perfect weight retention and expansion.

I love seeing pics of animals this size. I haven't had the luck to come across one that big in my hunts but it's good to know they are out there.

Really you are better off shooting the 100-150 pounders as they are going to be (generally) good eating. This guy is kind of stinky. If you've ever smelled a bad hog you'll never forget it. It's kind of a cross between funky gym socks and, very faintly, pig crap. I'm not doing it justice. It's definitely off-putting. This guy may or may not be good; we'll know on Monday.

I gotta ask...How'd you and Steve get that brute in the truck?

We caught him on a finger between a deep ravine and a steep gully (hah hah) and he went partway down the deep ravine. We had to drag him up on top, through a barbed wire fence, and down the steep gully. As it turned out the remains of an access road to a buried phone line was right there and we were able to drive my truck right down to the bottom of the steep gully (gotta love low range 4-wheel drive). We rolled him down into the gully (no choice-he was COMING down!) and I backed the truck up and almost buried the tailgate in the hillside. We basically just dragged/rolled him into the truck. Thank goodness. It took four of us to put him back in the truck after weighing him. Did I mention my back still hurts?

Are you coming up?

Hey!! I can do pictures now!!! The below was a test.

thats is a spectactular hog. I agree with the uphill shot. it does make it much easier, in 05 i shot my best buck 2000 ft down in a broken shale caynon in the wilderness, it took a 14 hour pack trip to get him out,

Hey!! I can do pictures now!!! The below was a test.

Hanging weight x 75% = gut pile, so that means 262 x .75 = 66, add that to the live weight and you get, 328 LBS.

Crickey! No wonder your back hurts.

I'll be up on the 18th, god willing and the creek don't rise, Chuck as well. Hows the roads down on the ranch?

Good job!:thumbs up2:

I just add 20% to the gutted weight--262 lbs. + 52 = 314. I like your number better.

Right now they are in good shape, but we've got a change in the weather pattern starting around the 15th, with rain in the forecast. If we get 1/2" of rain they will close Sudden. Those roads go bad in a hurry down there. We've been seeing hogs on North Base pretty regular, so I don't think you'll have much problem. I'm working next week, come see me and I'll give you a couple of ideas you'll like. Josh could probably have his arm twisted to go with you too, if I can't.

Steve and I are going to butcher those two hogs this a.m. and he's at least considering hams. The last two I did are in the freezer, and they were fantastic (from the samples). If you don't mind; email me your brine recipe again, would you?

I double checked the formula (meatman.com) and its really the [Hanging weight / .78 ] = live weight, so in your case 336 LB.

Of course it'll rain during my planned hunt.... Sure, any advice or tips would be welcome, a hundred pounder would do nicely. Two of those if Chuck can make it.

Let me dig the brine recipe out and its on its way.....Happy smoking!

Here's a shot of Steve with this monster. He deserves to be shown at least as much as I do.
