hunt property question

A friend is renting a house in Santa Cruz county. She noticed pigs coming done at dusk to steal the feed for the cows in the adjacent field. She mentioned it to the guys feeding the cows and they said "shoot 'em". She has invited me and my other half over to invite some piggies to dinner later this month.
Is this enough permission to be legal?
What's your opinion on this?
Would you try to pursue permission from the land owner?

I don't want to make this so much hassle for her that I get uninvited but I don't want to get on the wrong side of fish and game. I'm just not very lucky when it comes to things like that.

To be legal, you should get it in writing from the guy who said "shoot 'em".
And make sure the area you are planning on discharging your firearm in is legal. or are you using a bow?

My understanding is that it is county not city area. Bythe location, I expect that to be true. I will verify that on the map first.

I am bringing either the 30'06 or th 45-70. I'm a fire breathing dragon kind of girl. Can't pull a bow accurately and don't have the space for another all-consuming hobby.

We got permission to goose hunt on some property around here. Some other hunters found out and got mad because we got permission to hunt where they hunt and threatend to call fish and game on us if we hunted it again. So I called and talked to a warden and they said that we need to have written permission from the land owner and not the care taker.

I had permission to hunt a parcel of property in Nor Cal, printed a trespass form from this website and hunted it a few times. The owner turned out to be a jerk and ended up selling the property, nothing like hunting private.

Yupp... to be fully legal you need written permission from the landowner. Of course, I know in the country things aren't always done this formally, but if you have any doubts it's always best to follow the letter of the law. At the very least, I think it would be wise to get the word from the landowner directly...even if not in writing.

Congratulations, though, on the likelihood of getting access to the place! Could be a great find, especially in this area!

Written permission from the land owner to be legal as far as trespassing goes. As far as a legal shooting area, you will have to check with the local law enforcement agency.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I would rather proceed slowly and get it right than mess this opportunity up. This has been all I can think about ever since she called.
