Myself and a friend are looking for a place to go pig hunting for the first time. Any recommendations of guides in California would be appreciated. We would like to keep it under $500 if possible.

What would be your weapon of choice?

I know a good archery only location.

Look for postings by BigTusker. He runs BirdsandBoars. Check out his website, and shoot him an email. However he is archery only. As far as any other place, I don't know.

OK, OK, OK... The pig in my avatar was taken in April at Choppers with a recurve. Probably the best piece of land I've hunted.

If you want a guided (not semi-guided) hunt with a rifle or bow go with Frank with Mustang Guide Services. I went once, had a blast. I have never heard a bad thing about this guy or his operation. I think he now charges $450 (used to be $400). Do a search here and you will find his number, sorry I don't have it handy.

I've had good luck with Eldon Bergman out of Paso Robles on Rifle hunts and he's had a good piece of property for turkeys in the past (for what that's worth here in July). If you can't locate his number send me an email and I'll get it for you.

My brother and I both got good boars (3-1/2"-4" tusks) hunting with Nessen Schmidt near King City. Hunted for two days with one of his guides, on a couple of 50,000 acre ranches.

Meat hogs were going for about $600, trophy boars (over 2" tusks) were more. Email if you want more details and contact info.

I have also hunted w/Eldon and had a good hunt.
Didn't kill one, but that's another story.

I have hunted the most w/Marty Rovenstein.
He lives in San Miguel. He used to guide for Eldon.
He runs a bare bones operation. You provide lodging, food, etc.
Sometimes you can camp out on a property.
His price was competitive, but I think $500 for the hunt might be tight after trophy fees and what-not.

Good luck and enjoy it.

You will be hard pressed to find a quality pig hunt under $500 anymore. Its a good thing guides didnt raise the hunt prices as much as the state raised tag fees
Like everything, you get what you PAY for.

Not looking for a trophy pig, just a good eater and a nice time. Thanks for the recommendations.
