REGION 3 - DFG 2004/2005 Hunt Schedule for Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve

Contact: Robert Stafford, Terry Palmisano, Wildlife Management (831) 649-2870

The Department of Fish and Game will be providing several hunting opportunities on the 14,314-acre Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve in 2004/2005. During the appropriate seasons, walk-on hunting for dove, rabbits, quail, and wild pigs will be limited to Wednesdays and Saturdays during the first half of September and throughout the months of December and January. All access will be restricted during October and November during the elk hunting seasons and the Chimineas Unit will be closed to hunting between February and September. Free access permits will be available at the feed lot parking lot and at the Caliente Peak trailhead.

Vehicle access for hunting will occur on three weekends. Twenty-five permits will be drawn for each of these two-day hunts and each permit is good for two hunters. To apply for one of these hunts, applicants need to submit a self-addressed envelope and a letter or postcard with the hunter’s name, address, telephone number, and hunting license number to:

California Department of Fish and Game
20 Lower Ragsdale Road, Suite 100
Monterey, CA 93940

Applicants may only submit a single application for each hunt and applications need to be received at the address above by 5 p.m. on the due date. Applications received late, incomplete, or without a self-addressed envelope will not be considered in the draw. Successful applicants will receive additional information, including maps and special regulations prior to their hunt.

The first drive-on hunt will be Sept. 11-12, 2004 for dove, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Aug. 19. Include “Attention: September Chimineas Hunt” when addressing your envelope to the Department.

The second drive-on hunt will be Dec. 11-12, 2004 for dove, quail, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Nov. 18. Include “Attention: December Chimineas Hunt” when addressing your envelope to the Department.

The last drive-on hunt will be Jan. 8-9, 2005 for quail, pig and rabbit. Applications must be received by Dec. 16. Include “Attention: January Chimineas Hunt” when addressing your envelope to the Department.

The south end of the Chimineas is at hwy 166 between Cuyama and Santa Maria. I know there is access at that point but I don't know if it is the entry point for hunters. It is west of Spanish Ranch near Rinconda Ranch, if my memoey serves me. Not sure how big it is. There was a write up last year in the local paper talking about the new hunting opportunity. I hope it doesn't get overrun with people. -Tony

Being in northern CA I am not familiar with that area. I saw this on the DFG News page and thought some of you all might like to see it.

I believe you enter off of hwy 166. There are two entrances. I spoke with the DF&G biologist who covers that area and he said numbers are real low this year on pigs. When they fly over to count deer they also count hogs. I think he said a couple of years back they counted like 200 pigs and the last count had the pigs at 68....I think that's correct. Not sure about bird hunting up there though.

About 2 months ago I searched in Google for the Chimeneas Ranch DFG property.
It is a 14,314 acre ranch bought & paid for by the Nature Consevancy. It was subsequently handed over to the Calif. DFG. It is the South Chimeneas Ranch that was sold. The North

Chimeneas Ranch is still in private hands. The good news is that the DFG portion has 3 miles of the Cuyama River as its southern boundary(the river on this stretch is on the south side of Hwy. 166). The bad news is that this river portion is closed to hunting. The portions open to hunting is on the north side of Hwy. 166 & on my drive-by last month?? on Hwy. 166 looked very dry. According to the Feb. 2004 article, the DFG biologist said that the drought had thinned the herd(at that time) to his estimate of 20 pigs. Hunting access is tightly controlled by the DFG. Hopefully, dove, quail & rabbitts will be a more promising hunt. Check out with the DFG biologist before going pig hunting. At least you will come mentally prepared, as this is a very large area & dry. I don't know if they have guzzlers in there, but the dry vegetation may not attract the pigs. Just my 2 cents worth of course. Call the DFG for sure. God Bless. larrysogla.
