Hunter arrested after standoff in White Sulphur Springs

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (AP) — Officials here used tear gas to end a nearly nine-hour standoff with a local man who had a loaded rifle and threatened to blow up a shop, Meagher County Sheriff Richard Seidlitz said Sunday.
Dennis McMahon, 32, surrendered at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday and was cited with partner or family member assault for allegedly threatening his mother Saturday afternoon. He is jailed in White Sulphur Springs.
Seidlitz said the county attorney will review the case early this week to determine if more charges are warranted.
McMahon apparently was angry at a hunting buddy because he coughed and scared away an elk, the sheriff said.
McMahon went to his mother's house and started yelling at and threatening her. The argument was interrupted by a phone call and McMahon reportedly left the house saying he was going to blow up the shop, Seidlitz said. He then locked himself in a trucking company shop, which is owned by his family.
Officers evacuated a few nearby houses and spent hours in a failed effort to communicate with McMahon before calling in the Gallatin County/Bozeman Police Special Response Team. They broke a window and threw in a can of tear gas.
‘‘Dennis has a huge history, ever since he was in grade school, of physical crimes,'' Seidlitz said.
Officers did not find any explosives in the shop, but Seidlitz said McMahon's rifle was loaded and still chambered.
