For planning purposes, yes. But...my recent experience there leads me to believe they kinda make up their own rules as they go. IF you have BOTH, I'd bring both. Matter of fact, even if your not an archer, I'd bring borrow a bow and bring it, just so you can get into those areas and maybe chase some elk out.

Well, they had archery and muzzleloader areas open anyway. What they opened up was additional archery areas for elk hunters and then, finally, they opened a normally restricted area for achery, then for muzzleloader/shotgun. They wouldn't have been able to do that except that it was over a holiday and no military training was taking place, or expected.

I'm talking about area 22, its a firing range for tanks and machine guns. There's a big chunk in the middle that never opened. The impact areas behind it, areas 21 and 20 will NEVER be open because of unexploded ordnance. It was a little weird because the elk went into winter herds earlier then expected and stayed pretty much in 22.

Now in the early season rifle antlerless hunt (OCT), the elk were all over the base and there was no need to open 22. They pulled in 7 cows the first day, from rifle areas.

I imagine if you drew a archery only tag and the hunt was going badly and the elk were congregated in 22, they might open it. If the base commander said yes and there was no training scheduled or expected.

Honestly, if you drew the archery either-sex hunt in Sept or the archery cow tag in Oct, you should have plenty of opportunity. The trick at FHL is to pattern the elk and set up in front of them somewhere and let them come to you.

Those guys that have the bull tag for this month are in for a good time. There's a bachelor herd that's doable with a bow, shotgun or muzzleloader, provided they let them into 22. Otherwise, I'd say 16B or 13A.

ltdann, did you get different maps when you got there? I printed all of the ones out on the link you posted, but they do not list a 13B or 16A

Yes. they provide a map booklet for each area they assign to the elk hunters. The archery areas are not included but you can get them at the game shack. The boundries are well documented but the roads indicated on the maps are more suggestions than a reflection of actual road locations.

The base has some restrictive rules, but its workable. There are tons of deer, more turkey than I've ever seen, a good hog population and of course, the elk. Their website does a good job of posting what will be available for hunting over the weekends and holidays. Updated every thursday afternoon.

If it weren't a 6-7 hour drive for me, I'd hunt it frequently.
