I'm going on my first hog hunting trip in April and need to take the hunter safety course. I'm looking primarily in San Diego. The Turner's web page had a little information but their course looks like it's in San Bernardino. If you know of something locally, I'd really appreciate it.

thanks in advance,

Scott

Hi Shooten,

Welcome to JHP, and to the wild world of hog hunting!

Check out the DFG hunter education site for a list of local hunter education classes and instructors. You'll want to call to verify any names and locations, since this may not be updated as much as it could.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response. Project 2000 has a 100 yard indoor range too. That will be nice when I mount my scope this month.

If you're looking for a Hunter Safety course in the North County area try 760 743 8718.

This is a course offered at the Escondido Fish and Game range (private club, but the course is offered to the public). Course is offered on the 2nd Sat and Sun of every month. The club is located at the east end of Lake Wohlford.

This is where I took my hunter safety education. I would highly recommend it. They were friendly and professional and between the two teachers, they had about 70 years experience.

Cool. I've always been curious about that place. Do you know if they take new members? I live fairly close and I've heard they have a pretty nice facility. I can always hear them when I'm fishing at Wohlford. You're welcome to PM if you'd like.

thanks for the information,

Scott

I know where a good course is in San Clemente, if you have to travel that far. Sounds like you don't.

Just checked out Project 2000's classes. They are every 2nd Saturday of the month. You have to sign up in person way in advance.

They are having a swap meet for guns, ammo, bows, camping equipment, etc. on Sunday, 2/16, at 8:30am. Sellers set up at 7:30am. I just might check that out and sign my wife up for that class. If you're there, look for the guy with his three year old daughter riding on his shoulders, and say "Hi."

Scott,

EF&G does take new members once a year. In the summer if I remember correctly. You would need to put your name on a waiting list though. I was able to join on my first try, but I don't know how long the waiting list is now. Best way to join would be to go to the hunter safety course, or one of the matches and talk to some members. You will need a member to sponser you, but that is no problem. When I took the hunter safety course there, the instructor offered to sponser me.

FYI, all of their matches are open to the public. There is something going on almost every weekend, and trap is open to the public every Wed night and every other Sat night. Some of the matches are blackpowder (my favorite), combat, cowboy (SASS), NMC, high power rifle, small bore rifle, and bullseye pistol.

Best of luck. Let me know if you need more info.

Neil
