Hey kori it was cold and the road was all frozen. Wasn't able to make it to where I had plan :( but I did see a carcass of a pig wasn't able to take a pic as I left my phone in the car. I know there is lots of deer there cause the country looks rough and is thick. No sign of quail as well but If I had a truck would've made it further

You can do good for quail there, as well as squirrels and rabbits.

Deer are out of season there right now, and this is probably the time (out of season) you will see the most of them.

As far as I can tell, pigs are more in the brushy foothill areas in the lower elevations that provide good cover.

I am guessing you might probably be running into alot of fenced and private lands or inaccessable terrain when looking for pigs in those areas.

One other thing here I decided to mention in my edit.

Bears, mama bears with young and possibly quite protective at this time of year.

Do your best not to disturb them and be aware that they are there even if not apparent.

I was up there a couple of years ago and the tracks of both mother and cub in the snow made me quite cautious and a little bit nervous.

Mama bears protecting their young are very dangerous, in spite of it supposedly being a hibernation period.

I hunt that area for deer. I have heard of pigs running the Lower area and I know there are Quail up at the top but everything up to the forrest sign is private property, they are pretty well posted but the whole area is free range so watch out for cows at every corner. Most of the Huntable areas are going to be covered in snow or impassable with a car right now. The ruts tend to get bad with a little moisture. Either way Brekenridge is a very pretty mountain and always makes for a nice drive. I would also look at going up Rancheria but not sure where the snow is up there right now.

Hey StonePointer, thanks for your help. I wasn't able to get trough the snow. I walked for about 10 mins on a hill top and found a dead carcass of a pig. Not too old and I also found fresh deer tracks. Wish I had a truck to drive further but I dont

Yeah I saw pretty fresh deer tracks but due to weather I wasn't able to walk a lot nor drive further.

Honestly, that is pretty cool that you found a pig carcass in that area, it provides hope for public land hunters deciding to potentially fill a pig tag.

You should probably keep the specific area you found it to yourself in case there might be more around.

Do you have any guess as to how it may have died?

Also, I have to agree it is quite beautiful along that mountain drive no matter what season it is.

Yes it's beautiful drive there lots of cows the terrain nothing but grassland. Yeah the wife was the one that spotted the dead carcass. She pointed and said look wtfudge is that laying there. I pointed my 12 gauge and flipped it over. It was cover by a grey rug that looked like a trunk carpet once I looked at it, it had bullet hole on its shoulder. It's was brown cause the hair was still that along with the tusk and head. I would say someone had killed it, didn't have a tag took some meat and left it there. So sad brava use we paid for the tags, license and everything required. About 100 feet away we saw fresh deer tracks as well. It's my first 7 months here in Bakersfield and I'm looking for land to hunt.

Well I have to say it is cool that you found it because of my earlier reasoning, but not so cool because someone may have poached this animal.

Too bad.

I was thinking that possibly it could just be lost and wounded game and maybe another animal might have been consuming it, but someone took the time to put a blanket over it to hide it.

This costs us as hunters because it usually costs F&G to look into this, especially at this time of year and that means increased fees.

I found evidence of possible poachers up there once before myself of a young fawn's leg with meat scraped from it that looked as though it gone through with a knife. The only reason I thought poachers was because of all the beer bottles surrounding it.

No way to tell for sure though. For some reason I thought that it might be someone putting their little kid through some kind of illegal right of passage since it was only a fawn.

Yes buddy! I found lots of beer cans next to the pig carcass. I also found beer boxes, cans, bottles a few yards from there. Sad because it does cost us and also we don't get to see game in those areas. So where do you usually hunt? I'm heading out tomorrow morning on hwy 178 trough kern canyon rd and around to Calientebodfish and saddle springs rd. where do you usually hunt in those areas. (I'm not asking for your gold mine but ill take some good helpful info since I'm new here

Sorry if these are places you already know or too generalized, but these are areas easily accessible and if extra work is put in to hiking further into the bush carefully hopefully without getting lost, chances of success might be increased.

One of those areas burned out a little while ago and may be recovering for better chances of deer grazes.

As far as success at filling a pig tag, it is probably too cold and too high for them up at those areas.
