HUNTING HOGS IN NORTH CAROLINA

I am interested in hunting hogs in North Carolina. I have heard that there are a lot around the Neuse River in Johnston County. I am not sure where to go? I just bought a 30/30 Marlin Level action carbine, is this enought gun for heavy brush? or would a .44 magnum deerslayer carbine be better. If someone can assist me or take me on my first hunt here in NC, I would appreciate it.

I have no knowledge of hunting in North Cackalacky...but the gun you have is ideal for close up shooting. Anything under 100-150 yards should drop dead if you hit em right. I would rather have a 30-30 than a 44 mag, but that's just me. Those semi auto ruger deerfields look pretty fun to shoot.

Hogs are making a slow comeback in NC, so unless you're hunting the mountains you're looking for isolated groups. "A lot" is a relevant term, and I wouldn't classify any place in NC as being overrun. If you're not using dogs, you probably ought to plan on a really tough hunt.

I'm sure you already have done so, but check the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website for current information. There are a couple of population control hunts going on, although for the life of me right now I can't remember where they were. It's on the website, though.

The 30-30 would be my preference for still-hunting or tree stand. It's gonna give you a little more oomph and a touch more effective range than the .44 carbine. With either gun, keep it close and put it where it counts.
