Bets have been won killing an elephant with a .22. You read about LtDann being charged by a little pig after shooting it. Do you feel lucky?

It certainly didn't look "little" when it turned and stood. It was cleansing for the soul. :lol bashing sign:

Apologies dwikkles - I checked and you're right, no results, or "the word is too common". So, I'll give you MHO anyway. I'd say you'd need something with at least 130 gr. bullet and then it would depend on the range. Close range a .32 winchester or .30-30 would be a good minimum, a .25-06, 7mm mag or .30-06 would be good for longer ranges (and of course they'd work good for closer ranges too). Don't know why the search won't get the old threads though. Must be a "computer" thing.

Copy the following into google search box for the litany of discussions:

pigs .223 site:jesseshunting.com

I found google can search way better than most search engines embedded within websites.

LOL, it got damned exciting there for a few seconds. Glad I remembered I had a gun. I actually took a couple of steps back before I remembered that.

It had been a slow few days and I just didn't want to let that opportunity pass. By shins are still healing from crashing thru the sage.....

Using the formula from "ask the Meatman", I guess on the hoof the pig weighed right at 100 lbs. Dressed weight /.78 = live weight

BTDT: had that happen a few years ago--only it hit me in the leg going by trying to get out of Dodge. I was the only one with a gun (single shot) and had to let him out after he went by to plug him. My best friend standing there with his fingers in his ears saying: "Don't shoot the truck!"

You can kill a hog with pocket knife, but it doesn't mean it's a good choice. Too many people think if it can be done, then it should be. If nothing else, rather than debate if it can be done, just respect the game. Best to use a caliber that will give you a high probability of a solid kill regardless of how perfect or often less than perfect the shot is. Nothing worse than wounding game and it happens to the best of us even in perfect conditions. So it's best to reduce the variables that can contribute to that occurring. .223 is really too light to produce consistent kills. Keep the .223 for varmints.

By now, I think it's pretty clear that a .223 isn't enough gun unless your' pigs are "varmints". The last one I got took two shots from my .243 with 90grn E-tips to put down for good. The first shot was quartering away and hit the spine, deflected and was lodged in the neck. The damn thing was walking away and I thought I missed! Second shot between the shoulders as it was walking up a bank was a heart shot and that put him down. I take my 7mm mag or 12 gauge with slugs now....
