Does anyone have any info on hunting in Maui? My parents are going and I've been trying to help my dad find somewhere to hunt while he is there. Are there any public land do it yourself opprotunities? Do you know of any reasonably priced guided hunts? I've found a few giudes on line, but I'd like some first hand feedback. Thanks

Maui has some public land for pigs. Some are weekends only, others are daily, some archery only. Some are difficult to access because you have to pass through private property. Go to http://www.dofaw.net/
A 45 min. ferry from Lahaina to Lanai and he could be hunting axis deer.
NOTE you cannot just arrive in Hawaii and buy a hunting license, even if you show them proof of a hunter ed certificate. You MUST get a hunter ed "Letter of Exemption" from Honolulu. You can fax them a copy of your original hunter ed certificate and drivers license, and they will mail you this letter that you present to the DOFAW office in Maui when buying the hunting license.

Thanks for the info Glass eye! Is the axis deer hunt a guided hunt? Do you have any links for guides over there?
I found one called Maui Hunting Safari, have you heard of this operation?

IMO a guide isn't necessary for deer on Lanai, they're everywhere. However, if that's what you want there are some guides but I don't know them. JHO member "forkhornreggie" hunts maui every year and he uses Maui Hunting Safaris. I hunt Hawaii DIY so I'm not much help for guides.

Ok, so there is public land hunting for axis in Lanai. What about public land for pigs? Would he have to take the ferry to Lanai for that also, or are there places on Maui for DIY pig hunts?

There are no pigs on Lanai. For hunting opportunities on Maui, call the State dept. of land & natural resources / div. of forestry & wildlife for more information. You can get the number from directory assistance.

Good luck

I played golf while in Maui a couple of weeks ago so I can't help you much with the hunting there, but I did get in some bird hunting at the "PARKER RANCH" while on the Big Island.

They had hog hunts available as well. I didn't see any hogs, but plenty of signs and my guide said they had a bunch of em' as well. Your parents can hitch a ride on a chopper of small plane to the big Island for around $100.00. It was beautiful hunting there for sure.

Actually its my parents that are going. I'm just doing the research for my father.
They will be there Feb. 18th-26th.

The area that I hunt opens the 1st weekend in February and runs through the end of June. This is the only area that is open to pigs that you are not allowed to use dogs. The area is open on the weekends and the limit is one pig per hunter per day. The pigs are not really huge, a 200 pounder is large. On the DLNR map it is area C, the Kula forest reserve.

If you want, I could take your dad hunting on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th. I am not a guide but, hunt the area quite often. One consideration, there is a very limited selection of ammunition available on the island, so, if your dad brings his own rifle, it should be a very common caliber. For example, I had to special order ammo for my 7mm-08. There is also only 1 rifle range on the island and is open only on select days so if he switches brands, he will have to make allowances to sight the rifle in. On the other hand, most shots are relatively close, 50 yards or less.

Let me know if interested.

Pretty easy to find everything you need right here:

http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/IdxHunting.htm

...and DO pay attention to the requirements for non-residents. Also, check the seasons/days that hunting is allowed. There is a ton of info here.

CA, I have hunted with Maui Hunting Safaris . Rodney is the fellows name. He is awesome. As a matter of fact I'm going on Feb1st. Is your dad rifle? With Rodney the best is to hunt the Goats as they are plentiful but they also have a lot of hogs. There are Axis deer as well but not during Feb. Do a search for Maui in the Bowhunting forum as I have posted there a few hunts. I would highly recommend Maui Hunting Safaris. My wife gave me the trip to Maui for X-mas and so I'm going on a 2 day hunt with my buddy filming me. I will probably get a goat first and then maybe try for a pig. Usually I only go for 1 day but this time I'm going hunting twice. Feel free to email me or have your dad email me cbobo@boboconstructioninc.com

Haiku_Rodney, Nice work! I am new to this forum, but it is great to already see someone stepping forward to help a traveling hunter out. Way to Go!
