Hunting Public Land?

Can anyone give me insight into where I can find information on public land to hunt pig? We're new to California (Sacramento) and I'm having trouble figuring this out. I'm thinking it's not as easy as it sounds.

I appreciate any help!

I would also suggest you visit the Department of Fish & Game website where they have an extensive booklet on wild pig hunting (pretty large file if you ask me) and also use the "Search" feature on this forum to find posts regarding public land hunting. I am sure you will find a lot of useful hints, tips, resources from other fellow hunters.

Welcome to California. We are probably the most friendly group of hunters that you will ever meet. The sporting goods department at Wal*Mart should have a pile of magizine size booklets titled, "California Hunting Digest" 2009 Spring Upland Game, Complete List of all "Huntable" Public Lands in California. It's free, it's a light tan color, and it has two turkeys on standing there. Inside you will find just about all the public land that is available, and each place has a map number, phone number, and is rated as to which game is known to be hunted there. Take at least 2 copies, just incase one gets lost.

I have most of Region 3 mapped in Google Earth, which includes the Sacramento Area. Also, Region 4 that incudes the top pig hunting spots in Monterey, San Benito, and Fresno Counties. No charge for forum members, so if you find something through the BLM or Fish and Game that needs more study, check with me, and I will attach the Google Earth boundary file to my reply.

Also, part of Region 2 with Spenceville, Daugherty Hill, and Catch Creek

Public land is tough. Fort Hunter Liggett, Vandenburg AFB and Camp Roberts I think are your best bets to see a hog for public land. Ya never know tho, I saw a pig squashed near Cache Creek a couple years back along the highway going north to Tres Pinos. 3 Penises as the locals call it.

Get this publication, even if you have hunted here in California all your life. It's a must have, and at present the PDF fle is avalible for download. Attached is a pic of the cover on the ones at Wal*Mart.

I saw a pig squashed near Cache Creek a couple years back along the highway going north to Tres Pinos.

That's an awful long stretch of highway from Cache Creek to Tres Pinos... :wedgie:

Lots of hog road kill along highway 25 between Clear Creek and Tres Pinos, though.

Seriously, though... the DFG and BLM offices can give you some good info about where to start. There's some good stuff on this site as well, if you have the time and patience to do some searching and reading.

Just be aware, though... even on the best public hog hunting land (FHL, Camp Roberts, etc) it's tough and rare to find and kill a hog. The pigs are generally there, but they get a lot of heat from hunters, and the ones who take an animal are either very lucky or very dedicated.

Best bet is to find a likely spot and start working it really hard.

Speck, you're really not making me feel any better about blowing my chance the other day! All this talk about not seeing them on public land, etc, etc, just reminds me how bad I screwed up (as if hadn't replayed it in my head 50,000 times anyway!)

Fresno County has most of it's huntable BLM along the western boundary with San Benito and Monterey Counties. These are very large parcels. One that I made up is a combination of Panoche - Griswold - Tummy Hills BLM parcels. Another large parcel is Clear Creek. I also did Coalinga Mineral Springs and Curry Mountain BLM parcels. I tried to be on the safe side, and didn't do the smaller plats between the two. One road from Parkfield Junction heads north into Mineral Springs through smaller BLM plats, and the another up through Flat Canyon also passes through the smaller and takes you into the good side to Mineral Springs. Whether these roads are for public use is the question? The other BLM is at Pine Flat. The outside perimeter of Clear Creek is not closed, but check with the BLM Office to be sure.

I have been using the Hunting Digest mentioned as a template, but there is a lot more BLM and State easments that are not listed as huntable.

I got my criks crossed up. Specmisser has it right, just north of Clear Creek on hwy 25.
