hello my name is clayton clark and i am new to oahu. I am in the marine corps and i just got back from iraq. i love bow hunting with a passion but i am used to hunting deer with my compound bow in the hills of ohio haha not the same story as pig hunting the jungles. the hunt out here is a diffrent game. i live in kaneohe so i have the Nuuanu public hunting grounds of the pali hwy that i can hunt less than 10 min away. i have been out and scouted 3 times so far i have found some decent pig trails but not exactly sure what all i need to look for and where i should be looking i meet a guy that was a bowhunter coming out of the woods last night that gave me alot of good advice. it would be awesome if i could get some tips and maybee even come along with anyone on a hunt so they can teach me the tricks of the trade. thank you guys for taking the time of reading this. and good luck fellow hunters. god bless the USA

As a bowhunter you're going to love Lanai.
Type in a word search on here for "Lanai" I've written on the subject several times.
In brief, you can bowhunt axis deer yearlong, no limit, either sex for $50

Good luck,
As for me I haven't hunted The pali area in Ions as I am from the west side od the island called maile beach, waianae area. What the heck its your first try keep at you'll find better spots. There is a a few guys that post here frequently that are in the island and hunt often. They mainly hunt outer island such as the big island, Kuai, and maui. I'm sure if you're persistent you'll be sucessful. Check texas boars hunter, they have another site called Hawaiian boar huntaz. Alot of these guys hunt with dogs and on the island of Oahu, I' sure they may want to take a bowhunter out in search of pigs.

Good luck

Check out Cow Hunting on the big island. Look at the forum search function, just type in cow hunting and the posts should come up. For real the state of Hawaii allows for feral cow hunts. Now that is a lot of beef. THere is a good post or two on here about guys hunting cows on the big island.

Hey OGH,
Yeah, the hunting here isn't like the mainland, but it can be nearly year round, and there's plenty of variety. The Pali is probably the best place to start with a bow, but you should also ask around on the windward side about private land. I don't bow hunt (only because I don't have the room for a bow) but I know there are lots of people up there that want to get rid of pigs on their land. I have even heard about people hunting on church land because the pigs were such a nuisance, so don't give up!

HIhunter

Oh yeah, and you should start saving for a trip to Lanai TODAY. Tons-o-deer, and 50 bucks to hunt the private land year-round. There is a great campground over there, right on the beach!

It will cost you $275 to do the private hunt on Lanai. That will get you one male and two female animals of any species, or a combination of them but only one male is allowed whether it is a buck or ram. Lanai game management has a website you can look at. If there is any $50 hunts on Lanai please post the contacts.

I'll tell you what a champion traditional archer told me about hunting the Pali area.

"Scent-lock suits make a huge difference", especially Hawaii's ridges and hills where the wind has a tendancy to swirl.

"Step only on roots and rocks" because any leaves will give you away and the pigs are relatively smart around there because of the hunting pressure.

"Most of the time, you will smell the pig before you hear or see it." I don't know if you will find that to be true or not, it's just what Travis told me.

And as for my own personal advice, pigs in Hawaii will bed down during the day so it's best to catch them at dusk or dawn. Now you are probably thinking "duh" but what you might not know is that they also have a tendancy to want to bed down high on the ridges and, at least where I hunt on Kauai, there is this mass migration through certain passes and main trails. You may be able to locate a great ambush point! If there is uluhe fern on the slopes, then they will bed near the bottom of it. Or high on steep hillsides in dens that they repeatedly use (you might want to GPS them and check on them during the day). Another important source of information is to hunt the food sources, which you may have to learn for the area. Pigs tend to eat 5% of their daily stomach content in worms and if there are any areas that always seem more dug up than normal, they might be havens for worms. The roseapple used to have a lot of worms but I can't say for sure now because an introduced rust fungus wiped out roseapple patches state-wide and not only stopped them from fruiting but eventually led to their deaths. Other foods might be common guava and strawberry guava (if not too widespread), avocado, mango, or whatever else may be in the area. Even some grasses. Keep an eye out.

If you are hunting during the middle of the day, concentrate on those steep , thick areas, where pigs would likely be bedded down.

I heard there were goats higher up in the pali area too.

Hope that helps. Climb high. ...and I mean that ; )

RZA,

The private land hunt on lanai is $275 for rifle. The bow permit costs $50, but is good year round.

What Nic wrote is spot on. I dont have my bow set up but have been scouting up past my house on the Pu'u Pia trail in Manoa valley. Seems like theres a ton of pig sign. Just got to build some arrows and get at them. You're welcome to tag along with me once I get my crap together. As long as you know how to walk quietly. Look back my Nic Barca, Doccherry, Uncle Ji and my posts. All hawaii guys gettin hawaii animals. Theres a few more hawaii guys in here but names are slipping my mind.

If you are using Google Earth, I have (KML) files of the following Hunting Area boundaries located on O'ahu:

Ahupuaa O Kanana (Area C)

Poamoho (Area C)

Kakua Keaau (Area G)

Waianae Kai (Area D)

Nuuanu Pali (Area F)

Peacock Flats (Areas A & E)

I will attach the (free) files to a reply. My email is in my Profile. If you are handy with a GPS and able to load files into it from a Computer, I can also send a GPX file of the boundary.

I am new to Oahu as well. I am stationed at Hickam.
I just arrived from Spain and did quite a bit of boar hunting in Europe. I can't wait to do some Axis hunts.
I should have my license soon.

Hope to meet a few hunting buddies here.

OGH - I hunted the Pali a few times one trip to Oahu but didn't connect with any pigs. I only saw a glimps of one moving away below me. Oahu is where I generally vacation with the fam and I always try to mix in a hunt while I'm there. Good luck and post up any results.
