I spent the better part of last week on a hunting trip across central California. Spent a couple days before the Dove opener in Parkfield, CA hunting some pigs. We used Miller Bros Expeditions for the guide service. It was good times. I got my hog on the first morning hunt and my buddy got his the next morning.

My Scenario:
At about 5:15 AM our guide, Roger, picks us up and we head out to go find some pigs. The first place we try is a harvested barley field that is right up against a wooded area. As we drive to the area, there are some good signs. We see some pigs running across the dirt road. We end of parking in the wooded area facing the barley field. It is dark outside since the sun has yet to rise.

As the sun begins its ascend over the skies were able to see silhouettes. There were about a dozen or so pigs in the field. We wait. With about 10 minutes left before legal shooting time we get out of the jeep and we walk to the edge of the field and get underneath a tree. At this point the pigs are about 200-250 yards away. At this point we start discussing what pig I will shoot. I advised Roger that I wanted a meat pig. There were a couple of hogs that looked to be in the 150-200 lb range.

We hit legal shooting time and the wind is still in our favor. All of a sudden a boar start running at our direction. Roger says this is the pig and be ready to shoot when you are comfortable with the shot. I set up my Tikka T3 on my shooting sticks and start scoping the pig.

He stops at about 175 yards away, smells the ground a bit and starts running again still towards us. He stops again at about 150 yards, but he is facing me, there is no shot. So he starts to move again, but this time slightly to my left giving me a clean broadside shot. Now I just need him to stop. Luckily he only goes another 10 yards and stops, still broadside. I line up my crosshairs and aim for his shoulder. BANG.

He topples over and it looks like he's having a convulsion. I load another round and aim again in case he get up. He doesn't. After about 10 minutes he stops moving. At this point we hop on the jeep. We had to drive to the other side of the field to get to the gate. As we get to the gate I see movement. The damn pig is still alive. It's trying to get back up and run. Good thing I shot it's shoulder out. As soon as he tried taking a step he fell back down. He wasn't going anywhere. We drive up and get about 30 yards of the pig. I take out the rifle and put a bullet right behind the ear. Done deal.

Parkfield - earthquake capitol

Parkfield has more hogs than people. Here is a picture of the fountain in the center of the Parkfield park. Note the sign about hogs and here is a sign with the people population.
