If you are up on Thursday, come out to the gun club and introduce yourself. I will be working there 'til 5:00, and will be out there playing Saturday morning (maybe Sunday too).

The bulk of the hogs have been killed in Area 3--two boars were taken last night around Schuman Creek--140 lb. and 150 lb. respectively. Lots of wet sows, so be careful!

There is a scheduled launch of a minuteman on Thursday, so Area 3 will be closed until after the launch.

I would like to hear from you VAFB hunters on what caliber(s) of non-toxic ammo you would like to see in the store: This would be a big help to us, as this stuff is so expensive we have to be careful about what we order/stock. I have .270, .270 wsm, 7mm rem. mag., .308, 30-06, .300 wsm, and .300 win. mag. on order, as well as 250 gr. TMZ muzzleloader bullets (Barnes) and 12 and 20 gauge sabots (Barnes). You might as well leave your smoothbores at home, 'cause there ain't no non-toxic rifled slugs. We are also stocking the bullets for you reloaders, so again, let us know.

Be aware that the Northstar cantonment (Area 4) is being used for an OHV course; you can still hunt it but you might not want to....

The area around Mod lake is closed indefinitely! This is being worked on, but as of now, out of luck in Area 2A.

The combination for the cooler/cleaning area has changed so you have to COME IN to get the combo, unless I know who you are.

Supposed to be nice weather this weekend--oh, yeah: lots of rattlers out.

I'll be there thursday morning until sunday. Will try to stop by the gun club. I need the new combo. Got any 165 gr 30 cal nonlead bullets for reloading? I thought Remington makes a copper slug now. Plan on camping in area 4 campground. Will be in a dark green Titan. I'll be the one with a weimaraner.

I only have muzzleloader bullets in stock now. The only stuff we will initially be carrying is the Barnes. I don't know of any Remington non toxic, but Nosler has it's new E-tip out in a couple of calibers. Supposed to be high winds through Thursday, might affect the launch, which will affect Area 3 opening.

Area 3 should open by the weekend and Area 4 is open, there are lots of areas around Northstar (I don't hunt there much). Area 2 is good and if you have a bow, they are seeing hogs around housing in Area 1. 2A around San Antonio creek is always good for a hunt too.

Already have the 180 grainers but our source of supply doesn't have the 165's (or vice-versa). But I will try to stock them, thanks.

I have 10 bags of Nosler 270 cal. 130gn E-Tips on the way. If you wish to get a bag, I'll let them go for $25. There are 50 bullets in a bag. Yes, they are CA approved for use in the "unleaded" areas. I'll be at the VAFB Club early Sat. morning, and again Sunday for Sporting Clays. I drive an aqua colored GMC extended cab 4x4 with a 5th wheel tailgate and Idaho plates. You can ask around for Rich if you are there and wish let me know that you'd lile to buy a bag or two when I get them. You must be able to get to the VAFB Rod & Gun Club or Lompoc to get these. I'm not shipping them. I can get more if needed, but I need to know ASAP. Sorry, only the 270 130gn ETs are available to me right now.

I misunderstood on 2A, I thought the whole area was closed indefinitely! Around mod lake, got it.

Never really spent much time along SA creek since they built the new bridge. Its awful nasty thick in there. Seems the last time I was in that area, I had a run in with some stinging nettles taller than me. But you say its pretty good?

Where in 2 is a decent spot? Never heard of pigs in 2, but then I've never really focused on pigs before. One of these days I'll get lucky and one will just have a heart attack in front of me and I'll break this 18 year losing streak.

I feel your pain ltdan. I've been going there for 7 years now and have yet to get one. I have a great time trying though. I've seen pigs and even shot at one once. I know guys that seem to get one everytime they go. Sometimes 2. I figure that one of these times, it's gonna be my turn.

PBR,

Oh, I've seen 'em, don't get me wrong. Usually though, its in the back of the game station.

A few times, its at last light at the bottom some deep dark, gnarly canyon. Then, as you your finger curls around the trigger, this thought pops into your head "I'm alone, it'll be 2 am before I get that thing outta that hole! Naw, better go make some dinner"

I really haven't seen that many on the hoof. Lots of sign, though. Besides, its a chance to do some pre-season scouting and pick up my mount from the taxidermist.

We must have met before, it seems. Especially since we're both retired navy and hunt the same places.

Make a point of checking with me on Friday morning; maybe we can get you out and put you on a hog. I'll tell you what though: better hope the wind dies before the weekend--gusts up to 50 mph today. It's awful out! As bad as I've seen it.

You can also give me a call: 805 588 7902 cell.

Thanks Alan, I may do that. I believe I've run into you at the game station a time or two.

As for the wind, no way I'm heading up to 3 in that kinda wind. I learned my lesson down in 6. I got caught coming down from tranquillon peak once on a day like that. Makes a man appreciate life.
