I suspect you've already been told this was a bad idea, and in your haste to get the answer you want, rather than what's best, you've turned to the court of public opinion in hopes of satisfying your ego.

We all remember our first dog, the ones pro trainers call our mistake dogs, and for good reason.

Check with the breeder of your dog, if he gives the thumbs up, go ahead. If there is a long pause after your question, that's him making note not to sell you another pup.

So Dramatic!!! What do people do with these "pups on a pedestal" the other 364 days a year that you don't hunt them. I know just in the hills behind my house where I walk my dog every morning he stands the worst chance of encountering a rattler.. Maybe I should not walk him until February either.

Actually I was just looking for tricks on how to keep the dog cool. You never know when one of us comes up with an interesting idea.

Is she off of Bo Jangels??

Julie and Paul Knutson have been training him for about the last 8 months, Hes outta bearpoint "4x GMPR Cheif x Crackers" Julie is absolutely loving him and is looking forward to trying to get him his GMPR after the season. I was going to pick him up last week but because he is running this weekend I decided to wait and hopefully get his APR... Completely intact :) I tried to train him myself but quickly figured out that living in LA sucks for training hunting dogs, no birds, no starter pistols, no nothing.. He has spent the last 8 months hunting every day, so I'm worried the poor booy is gonna be bored outta his mind when he gets home, hense why I am gonna take him "Carp Hunting" lol..

Yes. She is out of Bo and Casey.

Nice breeding, good dogs!!!!

I would say keep her in the shade, lots of waterings and if she starts to look heated throw her back in the crate with one of these

When the contingency plan for dealing with something going wrong is considerably greater than the length of the proposed activity, rational reevaluation is in order.

At 6am, combining the temp, humidity and wind, the heat index will be 90 degrees on Sunday morning.

Both of you guys have thousands of dollars invested in truly beautiful dogs. One of my closest buddies has an HP lab and she's a gorgeous animal and a hunting machine, but not coming with us this weekend. I'm not trying to be a Richard, but our desires sometimes subvert good decisions. The heat is really the only issue, though we did see a 5 foot rattler come out of a green alfalfa field, while scouting CRIT land, 5 or so years ago.

I have a $100 public shelter lab, purchased at 1 year of age without a pedigree or any overt birdiness. With over 3,000 journaled training/hunting hours in the last 5 1/2 years, he runs in the top 10%. We have had multiple offers to stud. If he only had his marbles. If you read Milner's blog, the intensity of my program sent shockwaves through a bunch of guys who subscribe to the 15 minute retriever methodology. My dog is an athlete and is trained and nourished accordingly. He is field ready 365 days a year. We hunt two 3 hour beats a day, 25+ days a season, weekends on public land.

My dog is much more than a tool to me. In the field, we symbiotically co-exist. Yes, he's a family dog too, sleeping at the foot of our bed every night.

Last season, while hunting some grazing land, I dropped a valley quail in some heavy brush. Buster charged in and proceeded to thrash through the cover. He was chasing a runner. He returned to me, heeled up, bird in his soft mouth, tail wagging. One of my buddies noticed the the two 4 inch gashes down his chest, skin flapping. He chased the runner through loose barbed wire, and never let out a whimper. I wept as he gave me the bird. He's been to hell and back.

15 stitches. Bought him a skid plate and we hunted the following weekend. That's the heroism I want to remember, not a mouth full of dove feathers that better resemble a sorority pillow fight. That took and interesting turn.

Eloquently stated.. And I have to admit I have been trying to mess with you abit. I had originally considered stoping in Barstow along my way back from Colorado and decided it was a bad idea based on heat and Mojave greens. That being said I rarely hunt dove, and especially would never hit the opener. I would be more concerned with some drunken, low shooting fool, hitting me our my dog. But if there are any birds showing in San Jacinto. Me and my boy will probably take a trip towards the end of the first season. Hell I still remember being about 6 years old and my father and uncle would make me run out in the field and grab down birds... its probably the reason I have dogs now!!!

The Grinch's heart grew three sizes this day. I hope we meet in the field and have the privilege of watching each of our guys in action. Have a great trip and best of luck.
