Bob.. There is a season and bag limit on javelina's though.. Unless it is under a high-fence, then it might change the rules some..

Feral pigs are considered exotic just like aoudad sheep. No state bag or possession limits and no closed season.... All you need is permission to hunt and a valid hunting license...

scruffnbeez... your not going to find any land in Texas that is not fenced off. Mainly because most of the land is farm land and used for cattle or agricultural purposes.. My uncles ranch is over 30,000 acres and every bit of it is fenced.. Come to think of it, it seems I built most of that fence when I was a kid!

Yeah I had to go back to that link and read through the rules again to refresh myself. I always thought ferals were non-game but they are listed as exotic.

As for the javelina, I havent hunted much south texas so that is probably where they are at. I usually dont go any farther south than the hill country, so probably more down that away.

And TimJackson, I have a newfound respect for you if you had to fence in 30,000 acres of land, if only just some of it. Thats alot of area to cover!

This is an old post so I'm not sure if anyone is still reading it. Two things: First, if you hunt any exotic deer like axis or fallow you need a deer tag in TX. This sounds crazy, but I was told this by Jeff and with the TX fish and game. You also need an archery stamp if you choose to use a bow. Secondly, I went on a hunt with Jeff. Got a really nice blackbuck. You can see the pictures in the gallery. I wanted an axis and a fallow and bid on a choose any two from a choice of axis, blackbuck, sika, or fallow. I called Jeff and told him which two I wanted and he said to come in December. When I got there, he said all the fallow were mostly gone or dropped their tines, he didn't have any sika, and his axis were barely getting their antlers back. He said I should have come in August. I was pretty upset since he had told me what month to come. The ranches are pretty big, but the guide told me they are about 900 acres each, not the size Jeff said. All in all, I had a pretty good hunt for the blackbuck. Got a nice one, but I was pretty disappointed with the axis. I saw lots of other nice animals. The lodge and food were great. Also, I was able to hunt pigs, but after I saw them dropping some off in a pickup truck I decided against taking one. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. This would be a good hunt for a beginner.

I don't know who you talked to, but you do not need a "deer tag" for exotics in Texas. All you need is a 5 day out of state hunting license.

The following quote is straight from the TPW web site. Pretty self explainitory to me.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $45
Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued).
Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel and javelina (not valid for other game animals or alligators).[/b]

I hope you didn't pay this Jeff guy for that "deer tag". If you dad I would report him to TPW immediately.

And as far as the Axis go, they don't loose there horns on a regular yearly cycle like whitetail or muleys. They loose them on a birth cycle. You can have antlerlees, fully developed and anywhere in between in the same herd at any time of the year. I he didn't have any Axis with fully developed horns then all that tlells me is he did'nt have a lot of Axis to begin with. Fallow do loose their horns on a regular yearly cycle, so that makes sense, but your right, he should have inforned you of that when you told him you were interested in a Fallow. Glad you got a nice Blackbuck though. Thats my next target. Post it up in the exotic section when you get a chance.

When I called TX fish and game, they said exotics were things like blackbuck, zebra, sheep, etc. They said that for any deer species including fallow, sika, and axis a tag was required. That sounded wrong to me so maybe the person didn't know what he was talking about, but Jeff said the same thing and he doesn't sell the tags himself. For blackbuck, that ranch would be good if it were like it was when I went there. They put out plenty of feed and you'll see a lot of animals. The animals do seem pretty wild there except for the elk. I'd take a bow if I were to go back because they have nice stands by the feeders. To see a picture of my blackbuck go to the gallery and look at the pictures I posted.

Axis, Fallow and Sika are not native to Texas therefore considerd exotics. I'm almnost 100% sure on that one. Unless they have changed the rules. I know that I never used a deer tag on my Axis.
