Nic, if we just walked in for a day hunt would we have a chance at a pig? If we got one do you know anyone there that would want the meat? Oh yeah, I'm archery only!

We just cooked up a pound of meat that had been marinating in teriyaki sauce for 24 hours, with little bits of ginger and huge onion rings. Stuck it on the BBQ and then ate it with horseradish sauce. Not a hint of gaminess and it truly equalled the best cut of beef I've ever eaten.

Just to settle any false impressions anyone may have, Nic asked me along the trail somewhere, probably while I was lying face down in the mud, trying to decide whether to get up and take more abuse or just lie there and turn to compost, if I was an MD type of doctor. I told him no, that I hold a PhD in English [literature, specifically]. I assured him that my degree might indeed come in handy on our trip. If, for example, Nic happens to accidentally shoot himself, I could quote Shakespeare while he bleeds to death.

Sort of comforting, isn't it?

I don't know anyone personally and I'm always overloaded. You could ask random local looking people. I'm sure one will take it eventually. They would probably try to feed you out of gratitude.

For archery, you might want to try Kipuka Ainahou Nene up the road. Otherwise you would have to wear orange in this place. Nobody else is usually there though. Pigs are ubiquitous. and are everywhere. The cows on the other hand require this hike but it's reall good area for pigs where these cows are. I could recomend you some good archery areas as well where there's choke pigs and some-to-plenty sheep depending on where.

I got the video up and running. It looks real good and I believe is top notch for an amatour video.

Uncle Ji:

We took the tenderloins, backstraps, and large muscle groups down around the hams. That was plenty for me to pack out my half. Another couple of ounces in my pack would have done me in.

I was shooting regular handloads, 58 grains of 4064 pushing Speer 400 flatnose soft points that I had lying around for 20 years. That's a pretty hot load and the recoil generated is about 38 pounds. Quite a whallop at both ends. The bullet passed about 3/4 of the way through the bull and if I recall, Nic found the copper jacket in the far shoulder. The bull was really thick, so I was happy with the performance of the handload.

I cut off about a pound of ham and marinated it for a few hours in teriyaki sauce last night. Then I sliced it thin and sauteed it. The taste was like elk, much less gamey than deer but a little hint of gaminess, perhaps like the mildest venison you've ever had. My wife loved it. We'll experiment with the other cuts. I'm letting the rest of the meat age in an ice chest for another day or so.

Uncle Ji, how do you pronounce your name? Nic and I were wondering. Look forward to meeting you one day.

Once Nic edits his footage I think whoever gets to see the video of the hunt will be impressed. I have the perfect face for radio, but other than that, it's quality material.[/b]

I've carried out the boned remains of a 150 pig (maybe 45 pounds max of meat) at Laupahoehoe and I was DEAD at the car, that was when I was still in my mid 20s so I can only imagine how you felt with all that beef. I'd go just to be a porter of wild beef (back permitting).

Your load sounds awesome Bruce. I just purchased a bolt action 45-70 based a Lithgow SMLE Enfield and i'm SO excited at working up load fot it. I think i'll keep it open sights for forest hunting and bear medicine should I ever make my dream Alaska fishing/hunting trip. I have 3031,and 4064 to work with but heard Accurate 5744 is a great 45-70 powder. Won't go hotter than a Marlin load, my shoulder won't let me.

My name Ji is pronounced like GEE (wiz) 8)

Amen to Vancouver Bulls being named after Captain George Vancouver the British Explorer who introduced these animals as gifts to the Ali'i (Royalty) which eventual lead to Samual Parker jumping ship to round them up for Kamehameha and thus starting Parker Ranch.

Hey Bruce when I eventually back to the Big Island i'll bring a bunch of Axis venison, you'll love it. Do you think the pigs at Laupahoehoe would stand a chance if we dragged Nic and Ev up there with us? That would truly be a fun trip if I don't die from the hike back up to the vehicle.

This a I think the best thread ever in this forum, too much fun, and I wasn't even there. MAHALO!

Uncle Ji:

Do I think the pigs will have a chance if WE drag Nic and Ev up to Laupahoehoe with us? My Main Man, WE won't be doing the draggin', rest assured! The real question is whether Old Doc and the recently under-the- knife Uncle Ji will have a chance if Nic and Ev drag US along on a pig hunt. Heck, the big, black, hornery hogs will be feasting on our sorry carcasses while Nic and Ev glide through the forest at 10 mph, bunny-hopping over fallen logs and tap-dancing along lava rocks. Double Heck, I honestly believe that Nic could play "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" on the banjo, yodel "Flight of the Bumblebee" in D minor, take the SAT math test, and shoot three hogs with one 20 gauge slug, all simultaneously while talking with his Main Squeeze on one phone and ordering Chinese take-out on another phone. Triple Heck, the mortuary I begged to bury me after our bull hunt offered me a 10% discount if I die within 30 days [the coupon expires on 2/27/07], so if you're serious about a pig hunt that involves Nic in any way, Uncle Ji, we should do it before the coupon expiration date, that way my estate will save a few bucks.

Nic scares me. I've never met Ev, but if he's anything like Nic, before I go on a hunt with the two of them, I think I'll go back in the Marine Corps for a some rest and relaxation. Nic reminds me of an Australian Bushman or a Sioux Scout or an Innuit seal hunter or a Jim Bridger---you get the drift. Not a lot of words and absolutely no bragging whatsoever and every molecule in his body that of a predator whose craft is finely-honed. Honest to gosh, I can't keep up with the guy and even when he feels really sorry for me, which is basically all the time, he slows down but still outpaces me two to one. He stops for a few seconds, takes in the view, and sprints off. I stop for a few seconds, pop another heart pill, and scribble a new line in my Last Will and Testicle. I can honestly say that I have never spent so much time staring at another guy's ass, albeit far in the distance and gliding along at 10 mph, as I did on this trip. And it gave me no joy, you perverts who are ready to make some cute comments on this thread. I know who you are, so don't even go there!

I just saw the video along with my wife, and I'll tell you, the adrenaline began to flow. That's honest-to-Gosh a "Once in a Lifetime Experience," and in my case, darn near a "Last Thing in my Lifetime Experience." I'm gonna try to talk Nic and Ev and whomever into an overnighter at Morita Camp. That would be beyond anything I could have ever dreamed before shucking it all in So Cal and moving out here on this big chunk of lava in the middle of the Pacific.

By the way, geography afficianodos, did you know that the most remote island on the face of the earth, in terms of distance from a major body of land, is the Big Island of Hawaii? And did you know that the most popular taco at Taco Bell is the Spam Taco Especial?

Something to think about.

Damn---this is no joke. It's 5:34 PM here and we just had a whopper earthquake as I am writing this. Gotta go. No joking, it really shook the house. Had a Triple Whopper earthquake in October and it broke everything in the house. Bulls are spooky but earthquakes---big ones---are something else.

Later.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!!

Wow, haven't felt it yet. Maybe it's still on the way. Overnight at morita would be fine by me. I know evan wanted to come over to the big island some time for a hunting trip. Just don't know if he'll have off from work for long enough.

Im gonna try to make it out there before I go to New Zealand in the end of March. Maybe for 4 or 5 days or something. We should spend 2 nights!

I dont claim to be anywhere near as jungle savvy as Nicolai but at least I can keep up, or pretend to. I'm usually the one following when we're hiking...He's usually got the plan and the idea how to get there. I just love to go along for the ride. It seems like any time I'm ready for a journey Nic's the guy that'll take me there. The guys pretty much taught me everything I know about still hunting. Probably about 75% of it at least.

Nic: I just heard Kai Martin died this evening surfing at Wainiha, he hit the bottom and got knocked out and drowned...pretty heavy

I just got email flyers from both Hawaiian Air and Aloha Air advertising their $19 interisland airfare which means GO Airlines offered it first, it'd be almost crazy not to take advantage of that offer, let me see what's in my pua'a bank. Actually Bruce a couple young bucks would come in pretty handy to drag us old futs out of the woods at the end of the day. An overnighter at Morita would be fantastic. I once did an overnighter at Laupahoehoe, and it was one of my most memorable excursions. Also did a 3 day 2 nights hunt first day getting to "camp" at Mauna Kea State Park Cabins, then hunting sheep at higher elevations on first day, and Laupahoehoe the second for pigs, it was awesome with my best buddy and 2 bro-in-laws so 4 total in group. I'm open for just about anything. Ev get you butt to Big Island before you go back mainland school you won't regret it.

Hey Nic, EXCELLENT video , and congrats again Bruce AMAZING shooting skills there friend. Hey Nic do you have a video compilation of all your hunts that can be burned to DVDR? I bet you could sell them on ebay, hell i'd buy one. :)

PS Bruce, we felt the earthquake here too but it hit just about the same time as a a strong Kona gust which has been shaking our rickity old house for 4 days so thought it was just an extra strong gust of wind though notably stronger than any other gust today.

I'm going to try 400 grain hard cast lead in my 45-70 though probably using about 54 grains imr 4064 since I hear the SMLE stock design transfers recoil pretty good (bad) to the shooter (call me a girly man). You ever try imr 3031 in your 45-70?

Hey pwahuntin what school and year did you grad? I get plenty friends Waianae side. Aloha.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! You weren't kidding Doc. Just watched the video and that was amazing!!! Props to Nic for the great camera and video work. Wish I was ambitous enough to get video like that on my hunts.
In so many short words, I think I just realized that this is what my dream hunt is. Tromping through georgous forest like that hunting with you guys. Keep up the great work.

Uncle Ji,
I grad from waianae in 1975 in between cutting classes, surfing north shore or hunting Kolekole pass behind schofield barracks we got a bunch of pigs with dogs and knifes. But those days we could not afford cameras just have the memories with all the bradas from makaha and Maile beach area.

Nic,

I watched video of the goat hunt in kuai, was not sure who was the shooter with the hoyt bow. But it was some pretty thick stuff and was a awsome shot. I was fricking laughing after hearing the goat giving out its last cry. It was some nice footage. Amazing Nic was shooting the pig with one hand and video with the other, what bra are you like a tako with 8 legs or arms. awsome job working the camera.

I would not mind participating in a hunt on the big Island. Considering Salmon & Turkey season starts and of march. Then in april its time to put in the drawing for the following hunting season. Gonna put in for Ft hunter Leggett Archery Bull elk hunt and my wife the Archery Cow elk hunt. Along with points only for Antelope,Big horn sheep, and limited prime deer hunts. The biggest trip is bow hunting in south africa. Not sure how that will work, but Plenty hunting to do but not enough money to go around.

All the pigs I hunted in the waianae mountain but never hunted the hawaiian goats anywhere in the islands. some day. My xbrada in law use to live in Kuai and wanted me to visit with him, but he just move to Seatle,Washington. I was bumed out when I heard that.
Doc,
Good job narrating the hunt. I know you have a lot of wild beef in your freeze to last a while.
All you bradas did a good job entertaining us on this forum MAHALO and HAPPY HUNTING.

Aloha pw, You know William Aila? Good buddy from Waianae, he's Harbor Master at Waianae Harbor, he also ran for Governor in primary, good guy. Also know a few Nanakuli guys like Jeffery Kanui, they all come Maui to pick opihi with me in spring for all the summer Lu'aus. Used to camp Kaena point every summer dive and slide bait hanabata daze. Used to hunt birds above Yokohama beach in Mokuleia hills for pigs and birds in season. Also hunt Makua Valley behind the Bank of Hawaii Employee Rec Center, mianly goats but some pigs too. You know the Phelps Brothers, Tomas, and Kenji? Good buddies, they stay on Big Island now.
Big Island has 3 sheep- Mouflon, MaunaKea, and their Hybrid. Also get plenty goat if you know where to look. and of course the wild cattle. If you hunt birds there's 3 kinds of Francolin- Black, Gray, and Erckels. Also Ringneck, and Kalij Pheasants, and of course Rio Grande Turkey. Chukars in higher elevations too, also Califorina Quail. Plenty game on Big Island.

I know the Ailas from Waianae harbor master, I think his neice was my brother Girl freind they used to live across Tamuras. The last time I saw her is when My younger Brother pasted away. He drowned just past prey for sex beach before makua cave. He was checking his nets while she was on the beach and his weight belt got tangled to the net and drowned, this happened about 4 years ago. We sprinlked his ashes at tumble land. It was in all the news papers. I had one freind his name was Dennis Gouvea Capt of the Life guards on the waianae coast But I think his retired.

I do remember all the hanabuda days it just reminds us that the gray hair are getting more gray and the younger bradas like Nic is filling out our shoe's. I remember the days we'd dive from puka pants beach out side of Hakimo rd to Nanaikapono school which is called some thing else now. We pickup plenty Tako and now I here its some sort of refuge. Those were the days. I still visit the waianae side every other year. I'm retired military and can stay at waianae rest camp by pokai bay which is also called something else.

I was reading on the Hawaii division of Forestry but could not find if nonresidents pay for pig tags or not.

If you guys plan this out for 3 day trip I would not mind flying over and trying it out. It dont matter if I get something but just the fellowship of the Hunt. Let me know if you guys dont mind another hunter joining you guys. Not sure if I can keep up with nick but I'll be right behind somewhere staring at someone's okole or back side.lol

I get more then my share of pigs here in California, and its just the fun of hunting with good freinds and putting in the time for some good memories to reflect on.
