with my new digital camera!!! Anyone taken a look at the new Canon S1-IS? I have been a 35mm SLR guy for years, and wasn't thrilled with any of the compact digitals I have looked at over the years. And I just could not pull the trigger on laying down a thousand or more on a digital SLR. Well I think I have found the best compromise in the S1-IS. It has through the lens viewing either on the swivel LCD screen or through the viewfinder since the viewfinder is an LCD screen also! The view finder has a diaopter so you can adjust it to your eyes, meaning I can set it one way to use my glasses or another for use without my glasses. It has the full range of optional settings which take a little studying to learn, but the wife can just set it on auto, point and click, and gets great photos. But the really amazing thing about it to me is the combined 32x zoom with computer controlled image stabilization. You can really take offhand 32x shots that are as sharp and clear as using a tripod with other hi zoom cameras! This is not a gimick, it works! The camera can also take 640x480 hi-res AVI movies that are limited only by the size of your media card! The only downfall this camera has is it EATS alkaline batteries like candy. I went back and bought a set of Canon 2300MAmp NiMH batteries and they easily last 5 times the life of a single set of alkalines per charge, so problem solved. I also bought the lens adapter which allows me to use my 52mm filters such as a skylight 1A and polorizer. The camera is a little expensive compared to other 3.2mp cameras on the market, but for an outdoorsman's camera, I feel it has features that makes it worth the money.

Camera has too many settings to list, suffice to say it has numerous programmed modes for different conditions for snapshooters, or can be manually adjusted for shutter, aperature, white balance etc. Flash is VERY strong. I find on close indoor shots I have to manually set it down from the automatic setting to prevent it washing out the picture. I understand Canon Digitals are known for this, but it is easy to overcome. Manual focus is a little lame though. You have to hold a manual button down while you hold a toggle switch to adjust the focus. Good thing is you can set focus priority to any point within the display or prefocus by holding the shutter button half way, then recompose the picture and fire the shutter. So it is seldom you really need full manual focus. I paid $459 for the camera. List when released was $499. Here is the review that sold me on buying the camera.
