I usually lurk here as I'm not the most experienced hunter, but I thought this would be a fun day to share. I took my 9y/o nephew out for his first hunt down at Laguna Mountain. I've been teaching him gun safety and how to shoot for about two years now. He's taken to it quite well and truly respects firearms. I love taking him to the gun shops and the employees always remark that he's better about keeping his finger off the trigger, muzzle control, etc... than most adults that come in.

I've been down to Laguna Mountain several times, but never tried the Short Fence trail, so that's where we went. It looked very promising, as it was wet and green, but all we saw were some deer prints, bob cat scat and a few prints, plus a bunch of empty beer cans (several of which I carried out). We followed the trail until I was pretty sure we were on private land, although the trail kept going and there were no signs. He did great hiking and carried his own pack. He even enjoyed his first MRE. He can't wait to go out again and I can't wait to buy him his first rifle!

Nice!

Hey, do yourself a favor, get a GPS that takes those HuntMap chips, so you know for sure if your on public or private land; you probably know, but a lot of public lands have fences transecting them.

W.T.G. T O Double D, there's nothing more rewarding then mentoring someone especially a young kid and introducing them to the great outdoors and hunting and carrying on the tradition. Looks like a big rifle to shoulder for him and I bet it has a kick! But I am sure he's loving it, have a great day and thanks for sharing!....tra

Yeah I've been thinking about those. Judging by the crappy BLM map and my regular topo GPS we had reached the end of public property, but it would've been nice to no for sure.

I've avoided FHL because of the additional red tape and I've been going to southern San Benito Co. for many years as an offroader. But I'm starting to think FHL would be better.

Nice my 12 year old son is the same way

Makes ya proud don't it?

Funny quotes! Yeah the riffle in the pic was just for show. It's my 30 '06. He's shot my AR, but I think I'll let him grow a bit before handing him that one.

Double d. If you have a gps you can download free maps from gpsfiledepot.com. Very good maps & for $ 10 I think, you can buy a download of private property map similar to the
$ 110 sd card you can buy.
