It must be my lucky day. Me and my buddy, "Deadeye" Dan got drawn for the Santa Cruz hunt March 25-27. I cant believe it. I'm so excited. Any other JHP guys get this period? Now the fun begins.
I was drawn for April 15-17 hunt. Hope there are still some pigs left then. I'd like to hear from the hunters when they get back. Now I just have to decide; Rifle or Archery?
I still haven't got mine. They must of had a little mix up at the Post Office. Gonna show up, gonna show up, gonna show up. Take me with you, I can hide in the cooler and swim back. Congrats and good luck!!!! Hope you paint the hills red.
I just talked to a friend who had called DFG earlier today and they told him they were still mailing out notification letters. So maybe there is still hope, but it's fading.
SDhunter, nice to see the draw. Hope mine is in the mail also. Like everybody said, pics, pics, pics. I put in for the 3day period just before you, hopefully we'll see each other coming and going!
Did the DFG say anything about being able to look up the ressi on-line like you can for waterfowl?
Foulshot: I didnt hear anything on chencking online? Maybe you could call, like you can for a deer tag.
TF coyote: Deadeye Dan has a new lady friend so your odds aren't too bad. I'll let you know.
PS: Does anyone have any inside scoop on the pigs there. I read a previous post and there was some conflicting info. Some said 60-80 lbs and some said they were normal 150 to 200 lbs. I am trying to decide between taking my new 25-06 or my 30-06. i know either will work just fine but you know how we get when making these decisions. The .25 is at least a pound lighter so it would be easier carrying on that terrain. But if I do run into that mean old 250 lb boar I'd rather throw the bigger chunk of lead.
Speckmisser,
I cant take both due to weight limits. We can only take 50lbs of gear. The letter reccommended that we not even take food and water but to eat nuts and berries for two days and filter water out of creeks. They say to pack like it is a wilderness backpacking trip. Otherwise I'd take the whole arsenal. The only thing I am worried about is meat spoilage due to not having ice. I just dont know if it will be cold enough to hang the meat and keep it from spoiling.
If you have a really good cooler (see Coleman Extreme 58 Qt model) and a 5 pound block of dry ice, it should last a week easy (as long as you're not opening and closing it all the time). You should also make sure the meat was cooled as much as possible before putting it in the cooler. And perhaps bone it out to release even more of the heat.
I would definately sacrafice 5 pounds of gear for 5 pounds of dry ice. I'd also have another cooler with more ice or dry ice in my truck so I could get the meat further cooled down as soon as possible.
Been to Cruz alot in the old days. If its anything like then, there are football sized pigs everywhere. They are hyena assed, long snouted, wherewolf looking pigs. Not the best pork as far as table fare goes, every rock, stick and turd has been flipped so they can eat the bugs under it, not like Paso Robles barly fed pork. 80 lbs is a whopper so take your stick bow, its perfect for that. We would kill 2 or 3 per weekend with bows, I cant imagine how it would be with rifles.
