For all the people that get POISON OAK...If you can get to the beach and take a dip.....the poison oak will be gone in no time flat!...All the hunting locals (from the coast) know this and it's been used for generations. Take a 2 litter bottle with you and bring some home for later....

I hope this helps you guys, I know it helps me....

Make sure to wash it and get the fleas and poison oak out of it. I am finding fleas in my truck from the hog. I guess I need a gear platform for my trailer hitch.

I hope you can hunt with us next time Brad.

Franklin, Watch out with that prednisone. I heard that it is some really bad stuff (steroid), that should not be taken that often. I get PO real bad and have had the prednisone shot twice and it does work, just a warning. Never tried the salt water. Tried everything else, with only temporary relief. Sorry to hijack a little. Congrats again on the hog and monkey. Ed F

I have a little red rash on my hand. With all of the poison oak we clammered through tracking my pig, I knew it was only a matter of time even though I washed with technu three times yesterday.

Something I didn't know before this weekend is that wild hogs eat poison oak. They were chowing on that stuff like it was filet mignon.

Dave
Got my first spots of it today as well. The oil from the plant can remain on all of your gear for sometime. It's just not the initial touching of the plant that gives it to you. We need a poison oak smily face on the side here. LOL!

Later,

I sympathize with you guys with the poison oak... I also got it from pulling teeth from the deer harvested this weekend at FHL.

You guys should wash your Cami's in Tecnu as the oil can stay on your clothes for up to a year, even with normal washing.

I always soak mine in Tecnu and have not had an outbreak in 17 years of hunting in PO country.

BUT, I did wake up and find out my wife got PO from me even though I showered before bed.

She was Ummmmm how do I say........

I have Technu mixed in a spray bottle that I spray my clothes with before I wash them. I also perodically spray my pack and boots with it too. It is persistent stuff.

Nice hog. As for the P.O, try urinating on the rash, or buy a product called Zanfel. It's expensive, around 45$ for a small tube, but it is well worth the money. Better than the prednisone pills by far.

After practically bathing in Poison Oak hundreds of times, I've come to the conclusion that I'm immune to it! Is this do the fact that Granfather was Native American? I don't know

I use a product called Calagel which works well for drying up the rash. The small patch is almost gone. I still can't believe that hogs and deer eat the hideous stuff.

Hey LD, knock on some wood somewhere. Immune people usually don't stay that way.

A couple of months ago I had my first really bad rash of PO... I used the Calagel for a while which definitely helped with the dicomfort, but what I think really worked for me for drying the PO was RUBBING ALCOHOL. Boy, would it sting but I think it helped dry it up quickly.

When you guys get a bad case of PO, how long does it usually last?

Also, I don't know if this is an old wives tale but someone once told me that amonia works the best... Can any one confirm this?

Believe it or not I saw a TV show that was just about PO. Here are some things they said. You do not need to touch PO to get it. The plant emits it's toxins in the air. I've proved this to be true and have gotten it without touching it and I can sometimes feel the irritation in my lungs. Another thing is that you do not build a tolerance to it, just the opposite. I again am proof that this is true. I get it easier, more often and worse rashes! If you are immune today, you may not be tomorrow (and fall into the get worse catagory). My Bro in law if proof of this. He never used to get it and now gets it every time (ouch). Then there is my hunting partner that can eat the stuff and never get effected. The leaves do not need to be on the plant to get it. Bad, bad stuff year round!!!

Again, nice hog, Congrats. Ed F

There are a lot of threads on here about PO, and I've had a bit to say in a couple of them so I won't repeat it all here (I can hear the sighs of relief already).

But I will repeat this much. First of all, when it comes to immunity... well, if you're lucky you'll prove this wrong, but basically, there's no such thing. There are people who get poison oak, and people who eventually will. I spent nearly 40 years in poison oak, ivy, and sumac without so much as a bump. Then suddenly...

I'm much more careful around it now.

As to "cures"... only time "cures" it. Prednesone and some other steroids can help a lot with the symptoms. There are some good non-steroidal remedies as well, but they are only going to take care of symptoms (which is good enough for most of us anyway).

By the way, once the oils have entered your skin, they run through the bloodstream. This is why you get outbreaks in places you didn't think you touched... and in places you wish you hadn't touched. Once you've washed it off on the surface, it's not contaigious to others, but you can still experience new outbreaks in different parts of your body.

At any rate, here's a ton of great info...
