A couple of month ago i got my back hurt, so i had to limit my hunting activities. In addition the luck turned its back to me. I got couple of times skunked on public land. one time got a pig, but while loading and dragging it the pain in back was so strong so half way home i had to call one of my friends to tale the pig of my hands because i knew i could not process it. So got nothing besides spending the gas and tag money.
In addition my turkey hunting went bad as well. Instead of huge tom i got Italian bearded hen. Additional trips brought nothing but a couple of little toms with beard of 6-7 inches.

Meanwhile here on the forum people reporting success on the right and on the left. Everyone is killing something.
First i got envy and then i gut upset with myself. My self esteem reduced to nothing.
But my honey hole did not produced. As lite pigs were there, they where pushed out by a big boar who started dominating the area. For the last three weeks my cameras show only him at different places at different times, but never at the same place at the same time. I could not pattern him. last week i went 3 times and was waiting for him till dark. He never came.
Yesterday i got a filling, "today it is going to be the day".

At 5 PM i already was sitting on a hill under a big oak tree reading my book and covered with sent killer. All area around me was sprayed with "Saw in hit" sent.
The hill is overlooking a well traveled animal trail going through a valley.
The time pass by and no one comes besides a couple of turkeys, and a doe.

7:45 i finished the book and started getting filling that today is also not my day. It became colder but i forgot to take my jacket.
Motivation went down even more, but i decided to men up and hold for another half an hour.

8:05 i herd a single limb crack. OK, maybe he is coming. Nothing for another 5 minutes and then he ran across the valley and disappeared in the bush.
I'm waiting, after a little while he ran back from where he came from, then he turned around and started walking below the hill parallel to my location.
When he was at the closes to me distance of approximately 70 yards i puled the trigger.
9mm head shot DRT

And to think, I respected you as a hunter, when all this time, you were just getting lucky. To top it off, you did it again.

To Richard. It was Sub-2000. I know, not the best choice, but since i have it, i feel obligated to take it sometime for a walk. Same with my 1892 in 357 mag. ones in a while i let them to breathe some fresh air.
To TRA, the pig was indeed big, but maybe because of the drought is was very lean. Almost no fat.
To Wolfman,Unless i use a shotgun with slugs I always try to make head-shots, i'm lazy, hate to track them. In the past i had so many frustrations when just before dark i shot an animal and could not find it immediately. Then it is dark. In the morning you find half eaten stinking carcase...

Used to spend way too much time playin' Day of Defeat. Loved when I first found this track.

Question JustGuy, How far away do you keep your Game Cart? Do you leave it back at the car? Or do you stash it at some point closer to where you're planning to sit on an area?

BTW... that is one impressive headshot! Almost EXACTLY at the base of his ear... man... Nice work!

I keep it in my car. I'm superstitious, i think it is a bad luck to expect too much, it is like pushing it, like you are "too sure" LOL... I do not know how to explain it better.
Besides, currently my ratio of successful to not successful hunts is like 1 to 3 or 4, so, i do not think it is smart to carry it every time for nothing.

So... after the successful shot... you leave it there and go back to the car first? How far away is the car? Don't coyotes find your kill while you're gone? Or does the gun-shot scare things away long enough that it's not a problem?

GDog, Exactly,
i tag the animal, hide it from the view of 2 legged predators if i know there are someone hunting the area at the same day, mark the location on the GPS, hike back to my car, eat sandwich, drink water, leave all my hunting gear in the car (Rifle, backpack, binos etc). Take my cart and some water with me and head back. The car is usually 1-2 miles away, but sometimes it is up to 5 miles. I never had coyote issues during day time. They smell me, also i urinate close to the hiding place, this is the best short time repellent.
