Yes, Morels are a type of mushrooms that only grow in the spring, and in the wild. They are considered a delicacy, and can bring a very high price if the market is good. We had a good year, pulled in about 8 lbs in 2 hours, plenty to keep me happy. I took a bunch more pictures, but that card is still in the camera.
#3 was actually one of the biggest diameter morels I have ever found, can't really tell from the picture though. I like the sunlight on the green grass on that one.
Marty,
I guess since I have been eating these all week, you could say I'm full of morels!
Nice Pictures. Thats something I have always wanted to do, Bt have been afraid of is Mushroom hunting, I have heard stories about getting them confused and some are very lethal. Has kinda shyed me away. This Mushroom here called a Moral. I have never seen one like that around here, theres some biguns grown=ing rite now with all the rain and humid Nights.
Those are some sweet looking Macro shotsyou captured with the Oly. I saved a few hope you dont mind.
I have been eating wild mushrooms as long as I can remember. These days I pretty much only eat morels, they are the best in my opinion, and are very easy to identify due to there unique look. They very often grow around dead elm trees(the first 1-4 years), and like the dense woods, old apple orchards, valleys and streambeds. They can be sold for as much as $20/lb at farmers markets in our area. I'm sure you have them in your woods also, as my Aunt that lives in Delaware, OH picks them all around there and is a professor in Microbiology. She picks all kinds of mushrooms, but I play it safe and just eat the morels. Just make sure you cook them, and you will be fine. You might have to wait until next year though, as I think they are about done for this year.
I've picked and ate a lot of morel mushrooms and they are great. Good pictures and great contrast. Western Washington has lots of mushrooms that are save to eat, but I don't eat but morels.
Eat the wrong one and you will have to have a liver transplant if you are lucky.
