Funny, I just loaned them $760 dollars today too. Wonder what they going to do with all that money. I just hope they give me back a slip of paper with one of those three hunt numbers on it that I sent in, Would make me a happy camper.
New Mexico is the only place, well other than California, that I put in for elk this year. Those California tags do get issued, well at least if you are a resident, my hunting partner and I were drawn for the Bishop Bull Tule Elk hunt in '96. This year I am in for sheep and pronghorn in Utah and still on the fence for a Nevada Mule Deer hunt or Colorado archery hunt. I have a shot at a X9A tag and if nothing else materializes I'll get an archery only tag here in California. And of course I'll enter in the draw for a California elk and sheep tag.
This is a new year with a new attitude. Last spring and summer I fought tongue and neck cancer, the treatment damned near killed me twice. I can thank 40 years of alcohol abuse for the number 1 risk factor for my cancer, thank God I was 14 months sober when I was diagnosed (over two years now). I tried to make a D6 deer huntlast year, but was not in any shape. My health slipped off come November and at Thanksgiving I didn't think I was going to be alive at the new year, but things happened. My health improved, I started eating and I got in good enough shape to get 4 duck hunting trips in during January. I am a lucky man, I had a very tough life lesson last year, I learned to trust in God and realized what it really means that life is really so fragile and so precious. This year there will be no more "someday"s, there is only today, not a single one of you knows what tomorrow will really bring so live today.
Regardless of if its somewhere in D6 or D7 with a bow or the best Elk country that New Mexico has to offer I will be in the woods doing what I love this fall, or at least thats the plan.
This is a busy time for all of us with all the honey do lists, out of state draws and planning going on. I wish all of you good luck in the draws, a great upcoming hunting season and a little advice, spend a little extra time with the people that you love right now, don't wait for tomorrow, you really don't know what tomorrow will bring.
i moped around like a complete baby last year when i didnt draw a NM tag. thanks for the perspective tune-up. if i draw, good..if not, that's ok too.
good luck, and keep fighting the good fight. i lost my dad to cancer, and i personally hate the disease.
i will buy an AO tag in california, the annual hog tag "donation", and a upland stamp.
this year, i dont draw the elk tag, i will be in AZ chasing couse deer again.
Thanks for the words and sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my dad to cancer 20 years ago, it is a nasty way to go and so tough on a family. As a result of the treatments I cannot work any longer, but I can hunt. I may not be as go-ho as I used to, but I'll be there. I can go pretty good at it for a day or two, then it kinda knocks me down for a few days. But a little thing like getting knocked down for a few days is not going to stop me. I have my 5th wheel, a 4X4 and I can still walk a few miles so I will defintely be in the woods.
I might give that Arizona Coues deer hunting a try. Earlier I was trying to put together a party hunt in Wyoming, I have a friend that has a friend that owes a couple hundred acres in NE Wyoming that we got permission to hunt, but the guy with the friend backed out when it came time to pay for the tags. But another hunter in the party has Coues deer hunted Arizona a few times and invited me to join him this year, so I just might be chasing them little guys around. I have heard that its a blast.
Back to the cancer thing for just a minute. As I stated in my earlier post, I am a lucky man. I am living on borrowed time and I know it. I ain't wasting no more time with bad attitudes and bad people. Its a shame that something has to happen like what happened to me to realize that things can change in an instant. Life is a garden, dig it.
To any of you out there, if you run across a black ford f250, license plate IBOHUNT or a Nash 5th Wheel license plate HUNTCMP stop by and say hi. I always got hot pot of coffee and an ear for a good hunting story.
