I am planning to go hunt some fall turkeys in either or both the Rector Reservoir Wildlife Are and the Knoxville Wildlife Area during the weekends of November 15th and 16th and Nov. 22nd and 23rd. I have not spent too much time up there but if anyone is interested in coming with me message me and we can set something up.

Thanks,

Thor

1. Dudes, we've got to get your wives out into the field! Makes me sad to hear of all those potential hunting buddies staying home. My boyfriend is my hunting buddy, and it's great knowing there's always someone to share my hunting adventures. Added bonus: When your wife hunts, there's less complaining about mud and feathers and guts and fur around the house, because she's creating as much mess as you.

2. As for cooking duck... I just did a story for California Waterfowl with instructions for using the whole duck, from plucking to dressing to cooking (I just can't bear to just breast them out). If anyone wants it, shoot me an email here and I'll email you a PDF of the story. I tell ya, you can wrap 'em in bacon and make jerky and do all that stuff, but nothing is finer than roasting them whole and biting into that crispy fatty skin... It's like your own personal turkey dinner. Only it tastes like duck. Dang, I'm getting hungry.

Have a great weekend, everyone. It's duck weather...

I hear that, just getting her out there could be a struggle. She has shot guns in the past and used to be more into the outdoors, I just need a way to get her out there. How did you get started and hooked?

HiTech, what is up with all these lame hunters who marry women they don't want to be around? That's nuts! I would not marry someone I didn't enjoy being around.

Thor:

I was probably an easy sell because I grew up in a family that raised animals for food, so I'd already come to terms with the fact that meat used to be a living animal. That's a big obstacle for women. So, my boyfriend just kept inviting me, and I kept saying, "Maybe. I might be open to that." And then I just went along on a hunt and loved it.

My advice is to invite your wife in a non-hunting role where she doesn't have to make the commitment to hunter safety, licensing and target practice - she can just come along and be your partner, a second set of eyes. (And let me tell you, if she spots your game for you, there's a very good chance she's gonna be really proud of that.)

Are you hunting the pheasant opener on Saturday? Pheasant hunting is about the friendliest form of hunting for a newby because the only special garment you need is a blaze orange hat, at most. That and a pair of shoes that can get a little dirty. And if she likes that, you can take her on another hunt that perhaps requires a little more gear. And if she likes that, you can start talking about whether she'd like to be a full partner with a gun or a bow, or remain as a non-shooting partner.

I really think the commitment required for hunting is a huge obstacle. Not that there's anything wrong with hunter safety, licensing and learning to shoot. It's just, you know, who wants to spend all that money when you're not sure you'll even like it? I was pretty sure I'd want to hunt, but I didn't take the plunge until I'd gone on one hunt.

If she's interested in hunted but worries about learning, tell her there are TONS of women's shooting programs that expose us to guns and shooting in environments that aren't threatening to us. Our brains work totally different from yours - we don't go for that stuff guys do where they give each other crap for bad shots. We like to cheer and be cheered. I didn't learn in that environment - I took lessons, and practiced at the range with my boyfriend - but I've seen women at these all-women events, and they have a GREAT time.

Good luck!

It seems like a lot of people are looking for hunting partners now a days. I am always looking to expand the people that I know and hunt with. I do both archery and gun hunting for big game, and I hunt waterfowl. I would be interested in meeting with some of you guys on hunts. If anyone is interested shoot me a PM.

Well said Cazadora.
My wife won't pull the trigger on an animal but she goes with me on most of my biggame hunts. She loves to camp and hike, she'll glass for hours and gets very excited when she spots game. I can't believe how excited she was to find a mouflon skull while hunting in Hawaii. That skull is her pride and joy.

I hear ya. I've had stuff happen a couple times. But if my current boyfriend tried that, he'd never see his dekes again...

Looks like you're going to end up with 10 hunting buddies at this rate. I'm 27, married, would rather hunt than sleep.Bow-hunt when I can. Raised hunting birds, trying to get out pig hunting for the first time. I'm looking at January 9th,10th, 11th at Lake Sonoma Bowhunting. East Park Res. looked pretty good too.

I'm looking for the same trip somewhere in January. I'm from San Jose area, would like to start bow-hunting one day, and pigs look like a good starter target to me. I was hunting birds before, too (with shotgun though).
Lake Sonoma seems to be the closest spot to us, open for archery only. I have no idea what is involved in pigs hunting - do we need blinds/tree stands etc., or is it pure walking? There are advanced hunter education classes by DFG for pig hunting, but the closests will be on April 25th.

If interested, we can meet on Stevens Creek archery range (BHU) some day and discuss details.

Btw, DevGau, how was your scouting trip to Sonoma Lake? Did you make it?

So what happened to this thread. Did any of you guys hook up and go hunting? Has anyone been to Cottonwood off of Hwy 152?

I have a lack of hunting partner problem too.

I'm 49,
My son doesn't hunt.
My wife does, but is not up for how I want to.

I hunt Deer & Bear in D-7, also Deer & Pig in A-zone south.

The trouble I'm having is finding a partner or crew that's willing to leave the roads behind.
I like to hike into a hunt area.
Day hikes & backpacking as well.

Where about do you live in the bay area.
I grew up in Half Moon Bay.

DK

That sounds like the hunting I'd like to do. If you're still looking for a buddy to go with (I'm not a licensed hunter yet, I'd just be going with you to learn), please PM me or e-mail me at Jason _ 762 @ msn.com (without the spaces).

Hope to hear from ya,
Jason

I have the same situation. My last hunting partner passed away suddenly at a young age. I really want to hunt whatever is available. I enjoy quail and dove, have done occasional deer. I want to add pig and more deer if I can.

I live in So Riverside County. I am willing to drive.

My real goal is to pass this heritage onto my sons - 8, 13 and 17.
(I think that is great I always help youth hunters out, we are having a Junior Pheasant hunt on Nov. 7th looking for more juniors it is about 2 hours north of Bakersfield. PM me if you are intrested in this for your kids and leave a cell number where you could be reached.) Thanks The Lab Guy

I will take any new hunter out, my only rule is that you pass the hunters safety course, be licensed and legal or you dont get a gun. I have one more rule: No booze. Not even beer., until after hunting is done. I live 10 minutes north of the Golden Gate and hunt ducks and pheasant during the seasosn and deer as well. I'll be out for duck at least once a week this season. Any one who wants to learn or hook up for a hunt, send me a PM. I am on JHO daily. Also, I can tell you how to get started in waterfowl hunting for $500.00 or less. No, I dont mean you pay me that amount, I mean 500.00 as a budget for yourself. In the meantime I have plenty of gear to loan a newbie on his/her first hunt. I usually hunt alone. Season's rapidly approaching................
